Greg Newport Captures 2010 PPA National Championship Title

United States of America 20 Sep 2010 at 06:20 | Published by:  | Views: 9192 | News search

Greg Newport Captures 2010 PPA National Championship Title 18 September 2010 - Lynchburg, VA - On a breezy and seasonably cool late summer morning, the PPA National Tour contested the final two rounds of the 180-hole PPA National Championship, professional putting's premier event, on the creatively-designed course #1 and #2 layouts at the beautiful Lynchburg, VA Putt-Putt Fun Center. The final day of tournament action was filmed by Lynchburg's ABC-TV affiliate, with PPA Commissioner and Lynchburg course owner Joe Aboid and APA member Dennis Carter, the station's sports director, serving as commentators.

Greg Newport, 40, of Greensboro, NC crafted brilliant final-day rounds of 21 and 23 to cruise to a four-shot victory. Rounds of 26, 29, 23, 24, 30, 25, 25, 32, 21, and 23 gave Newport a 180-hole total of 258, 102-under par, to secure the $1,250.00 winner's check and the first PPA National Championship title of his storied career. 2006 PPA National Champion and second-day leader Brad Lebo shared runner-up honors at 262 with teen putting prodigy Olivia Prokopova of the Czech Republic. A three-way, fourth-place tie at 265 included 2006 PPA National Doubles Champion Randy Orr, PPA Midwest Tour putting legend Gary Watson, and recently-crowned PPA Senior National Champion Frank Warren. The final of the 29 money spots awarded in the tournament fell at 180-hole score of 274.

JJM, you are absolutely correct. Greg Newport has now won the PPA National Championship along with 7 other PPA National Tournaments (including two National Doubles titles with Rick Rybaczek) and nearly 60 state/regional events in his professional career which started in 1990. His final day performance of 21-23=44, moved him from 5 strokes behind eighth round leader Brad Lebo to a 4 stroke win.

Also remarkable was the play of 15 year old Olivia Prokopova. Olivia played at an incredibly high level for such a young player. The courses in Lynchburg, Virginia are quite tricky. There was talk among the players how much trouble there is on the courses if your shots are not well struck. Many excellent players even "layed-up" for a 2 on one or two holes. Olivia practiced hard and was well prepared. She was one of only 3 players to score in the 20s all ten rounds. The other two finished tied 10th and tied 18th. She won the admiration of many long-time PPA pros. Prior to this past weekend, Olivia has had some nice finishes and some disappointing finishes in less than 10 tournaments in the PPA. Now, with her excellent runner-up finish in the 2010 PPA National Championship- the most difficult to win minigolf tournament played on a surface other than eternite, beton or Swedish felt, Olivia must be considered among the top players in the world on surfaces other than E, B or felt.

Olivia tied 2nd, a historical non-American medalist.

Greg joined Lebo as the second player of all time to win the national championships of PPA and USPMGA in his career. Actually he is the reigning champion of them both at the moment. His landslide victory at US Open 2007 convinced me of the skill level of this player.
