Italian champs.: Leuci-Flamini as in 2010, Cusano teams make a double

Italian champs.: Leuci-Flamini as in 2010, Cusano teams make a double

During last weekend the Italian overall and team Championships have been played in Sarnico.

This is a very old concrete course, built in early '60s, which has been renewed in the last years, and the result showed that with many "green" rounds on a course where it was very difficult to do that only a couple of years ago.

It has been two very hard and long days for all the 120 players involved in the tournament. Both days started at 7.30 and finished at 19.00 with quite high temperatures and high humidity.

The jury decided to play 4 rounds for the teams + 2 individual final rounds.

Starting from the team event, we have a double title for GSP Cusano, as it happened in 2011 in Canegrate.

About ladies teams, no changes from the league event: GSP Cusano is the best team by far and won with a safe margin of 20 strokes on MC Monza. Third place and bronze medal for MMC Paderno.
The winning team is made by: Antonella Flamini, Sara Marchiani, Anna Bandera and Lauretta Prina as substitute .

This is the final podium ranking of ladies teams:

1 GSP CUSANO 96 91 91 91 30,8 369
2 MC MONZA 103 93 98 95 32,4 389
3 MMC PADERNO 101 109 98 103 34,3 411

Many more emotions and suspence in the men team event. Here we had 4 teams playing on the same level for almost all the tournament.
After first round, the surprising leader of the ranking was GSP Lozza (which ended in last place on the league ranking) with same score of GSP Cusano, just one better than GSP Vergiate and 3 better of MC Monza.
Monza took the lead after second round with 3 strokes on Lozza and 5 on Cusano and Vergiate.
On the third round Lozza lost contact with the other three teams, and GSP Cusano took the lead with a very narrow margin of 1 stroke on Vergiate and 2 strokes on Monza.
So the last round started with an incredible situation of three teams in two strokes, and this stimulated the players to give their best.
GSP Cusano gave no chance to Vergiate with a very special round of 174 strokes, by far the best of the tournament. Also Vergiate played a very good 179 but could do anything more than save the 2nd place from MC Monza which ended the last round with 183 strokes.
This is the second italian title for GSP Cusano in the men teams, after the one won in Canegrate in 2011.
This is the winning team: Paolo Porta, Paolo Belli, Roberto Alemanno, Claudio Santopietro, Emanuele Prestinari, Pierluigi Marchiani and Giuseppe Rubini as substitute

This is the final ranking podium of the male team event:

1 GSP CUSANO 185 188 180 174 30,3 727
2 GSP VERGIATE 1 186 187 181 179 30,5 733
3 MC MONZA 188 180 187 183 30,8 738

In the individual event, the titles went to the two players that won the edition 2010 in Predazzo: Antonella Flamini (MC Aponense) in the ladies category and Francesco Leuci (MT Amatese) in the men category. For both of them, this is the second overall individual title.

Antonella dominated the ladies event with a very solid and regular game on 30 average. She could also make a "4" on the last lane without risking to lose the title, that she took with 6 strokes advantage on Anna Bandera from GSP Cusano. Third place and bronze medal for Cristina Ruggiero from the home team GSP Sebino.

Also in the individual game, the biggest suspence came from the men event. The best player after team rounds has been Ivan Baruscotti from GSP Vergiate with an unbelievable score of 112 strokes, which is the course record by far. But Ivan is a Swiss player, so he has to stop playing after the team rounds.
So the best player after 4 rounds became Francesco Leuci with 115 strokes, followed by Pierluigi Marchiani (GSP Cusano) with 117 and Paolo Porta (MGC Novi Ligure) with 118.
Other players followed with small gaps.

During the first final round Francesco managed to open the gap up to 3 strokes on Pierluigi and 5 on Paolo. In the while, Stefano Piccini from MT Amatese scored a 27 and got the third place only 4 strokes far from the lead.
But in the last round something changed. Pierluigi and Paolo started very well, not the same for Francesco: after 9 lanes we had -1 Francesco, -4 Pierluigi, - 5 Paolo. That means that Francesco and Pierluigi were tied and Paolo just one stroke back. At lane 15 Francesco got one stroke on Pierluigi, but after 17 they were tied again. Paolo lost one more stroke and had to end in third place like last year in Algund (his 9th podium at italian championships in the last 13 years). The playoff between Francesco and Pierluigi ended immediately at lane one with ace for Francesco, that took his second title. For Pierluigi this is the second italian championship lost at playoff after the one in Vergiate back in 2001 (won by Paolo Porta).

The best round of the tournament has been played by Roberto Alemanno (GSP Cusano) with 26 strokes.

These are the top 5 ladies and 10 men of this italian championship:
