Miniature Golf and Food - Part 2

Miniature Golf and Food - Part 2
Swingers London  (Photo by The Putting Penguin)

Last summer we kicked off a series looking at how miniature golf and food are becoming a more prevalent pairing in the world. Today we'll look at a few places that are following this trend including one I got to personally sample in London in February.

The first in our list comes out of Brisbane, Australia and is the new
Holey Moley's Golf Club (which has a great tagline on their website - "No Ifs, Just Putts"). The location is an old church which they have converted to a retro cocktail bar along with two 9-hole minigolf courses. The two course concept seems popular in these types of establishments (as you'll see below) and it's likely due to better turnover of guests combined with a quicker game for the guests. Their website has a very cool walkthrough video and it looks like a great place to have a drink and a round.

The second in our list is the amusingly named
Swingers in London which we had a chance to visit. This course had a fairly speakeasy feel from the outside with some simple signage, having to walk downstairs to get to the venue and being an 18 and over location. Swingers boasts two 9-hole minigolf courses as well and while they have a similar look and feel, they both do play a bit different so it's worth playing a round on each (and there's plenty of places to put your drink while you are putting). They have a wide variety of excellent food available, several bars throughout the area and a fair amount of seating and viewing sections. You can definitely make a night out of visiting and it's location in central London seemed to make it a hotspot for after work activities, even on a Tuesday night. With the added bonus of having a scoring app where you can submit your score, and possibly see it on the screen for best scores of the day/week/all-time, it can also be a fun competition between co-workers. It was great to see miniature golf mixed seamlessly into the after work scene.

The final course we'll look at in this article is a departure from the traditional "drink and putt" we've been seeing.
Nine Below in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA, claims to be the world's first "Maker's Golf" experience and they are diverting from the standard in a couple of ways. The first is while there will be drinks, snacks and service on the course, it is a "tip free" bar which is a rarity in the United States. Instead of bartenders and servers jockeying for those extra dollars sent their way in the form of tips, it will be built into their hourly rate. Second, while similar to the others in this article it has two 9-hole course, the catch is that the holes are entirely created by the patrons for each round. You and 8 other teams sign up for a block of time which you design your hole. You chose the placement, theme, boundaries and obstacles and when complete everyone goes through and plays all 9 holes created for the course (if there aren't enough teams the staff kicks in to fill the remaining holes). It sounds like an amazing way to blend both food and art together in a fun round of minigolf.

Do you know of a fun location that combines putting and eating/drinking? Let us know at patsheridan@minigolfnews.com and we may feature it in an upcoming article.
