Report from the Pirate Cove Smugglers Cup and Pirate Cove Smugglers Cup Minigolf Competitions

The British Minigolf Association and Pirate Cove Adventure Golf at Bluewater Park organise two Minigolf tournaments as part of the ‘Join In Local Sport’ weekend.

The British Minigolf Association and Pirate Cove Adventure Golf at Bluewater Park teamed-up to host a two-days of Minigolf action on the 18th and 19th August as part of the UK-wide ‘Join In Local Sport’ weekend. Two tournaments took place with a total of 66 players competing in the competitions held on the 18-hole Smugglers Adventure Golf course.

On Saturday 18th August 32 players competed in the first-ever Pirate Cove Smugglers Cup competition. The contest was open to players of all ages and abilities and was split into adult and under-16 categories. A total of 52 players completed 60 rounds of Minigolf during the day. Joint winners of the adult contest were Philip Exall and Lee Edwards having both scored rounds of 39 (+3). Sam Conroy and Richard Payne tied in third-place with a best score of 41(+5). In the under-16-year olds division twenty players competed and first-place went to Alex Exall with a score of 38 (+2). Connor Gill was runner-up with a score of 44(+8). Third-place went to George Edwards with a score of 45(+9).

On Sunday 19th the three-round Pirate Cove Open Minigolf tournament saw the top players from Saturday’s competition take on the BMGA Tour Pro players in an Open contest. 17-players took part in the event. Oxford’s Michael Smith, a member of the Kent Minigolf Club, defeated teammate Sean Homer at the sixth extra-hole of a sudden-death play-off to win the title. Both players had finished regulation play on a score of 97 (-11). Adam Kelly of the KMGC was third. Seth Thomas of the Cambridgeshire Mini Golf Club finished in fourth-place. In the novice player category Harley Edwards won the top novice prize finishing in tenth place overall. Pirate Cove Smugglers Cup champion Lee Edwards was the novice player runner-up and finished 11th overall. Bulent Hossein finished the novice contest in third-place and 12th overall. During the Pirate Cove Open Sean Homer beat his own previous course record of 31 (-5) to set a new BMGA course record of 30 (-6) in round two. Seth Thomas equalled the record in his final round.

Sean Homer, Chairman of the BMGA said “The BMGA was delighted to return to the Pirate Cove course in Bluewater Park to be a part of the Pirate Cove Adventure Park minigolf competitions. It was a great event on Saturday 18th August and I am sure we saw some stars of the future Putting their way around the excellent Smugglers course. We were also really pleased to be able to be part of the ‘Join-In Local Sport’ campaign and encourage more people to get involved in the exciting and fun sport of Minigolf. Above all, the weekend was great fun and with the public-only event on Saturday we saw a debut champion crowned!”
