Michael Smith wins the Midlands Open and John McIver & Nick Chitty win the British Doubles Championships in Minigolf Tournament double header weekend at the Four Ashes Golf Centre in Dorridge, Solihull.

The 12-hole Minigolf course at the Four Ashes Golf Centre in Dorridge, Solihull played host to the British Minigolf Association (BMGA) Tour on Saturday 8th and Sunday 9th September as 34 players competed for the Midlands Open title and 17 teams vied for the BMGA British Doubles Championship.

First up on Saturday 8th September was the Midlands Open tournament with 34 players competing.

The four-round competition was won by the reigning World Crazy Golf Champion, Michael Smith from Oxford. Smith, a member of the Kent Minigolf Club scored rounds of 18, 20, 19 and 21 for a total of 78 (-18) to win the title.

Canterbury’s Marc Chapman was the runner-up with a score of 84 (-12). 2010 and 2011 Champion Chris Harding finished the tournament in third-place on a score of 85 (-11). Margate’s Scott Lancley defeated KMGC teammate Sean Homer in a sudden-death play-off in the battle for fourth-place after both players scored 89 (-7) in regulation play.

Midlands Minigolf Club player Adam Breeden was the top novice beating his wife and MMGC teammate Marina Breeden in a play-off after both players tied for 24th place on a score of 104 (+8).

Another sudden-death play-off was required to decide the Aces Championship for most holes-in-one over the four-rounds. Cambridgeshire Minigolf Club Captain James Rutherford retained his Aces Champion title from the 2011 Midlands Open by defeating Planet Hastings Crazy Golf Club Captain John McIver after both players shot thirteen holes-in-one over the 48-holes.

The team of John McIver and Nick Chitty won the BMGA British Doubles Championships on Sunday 9th September winning all six of their matches on the road to the title.

16 pairs competed in the tournament with each of the teams playing in a qualifying group stage comprised of 12-hole matches, before moving on to a knockout stage to determine the final rankings.

The final pitted McIver and Chitty against Chris Smith and Seth Thomas and the team from the Planet Hastings Crazy Golf Club won the game 3&1 to take the title.

McIver and Chitty won through the group stage and defeated the team of Luton’s Richard Gottfried and Margate’s Scott Lancley who once again lost to the eventual champions in the quarter-finals. The London Minigolf Club team of Chris Jones and Brad Shepherd were the duo’s victims in the semi-finals to set up the match against Smith and Thomas.

The all-Cambridgeshire Mini Golf Club pairing of Smith and Thomas’ road to the final saw them finish as runners-up in their group before defeating Marion Homer and Sean Homer in the quarter-finals and John Moore and David Donnelly in the semi-finals.

In the third and fourth place play-off match Jones and Shepherd were defeated by the team of John Moore and David Donnelly who claimed the bronze medals with a 3&1 victory.

When I saw the photos of the course I wondered how could one score an average like Michael did. It was only when I checked the result list that I saw there are only 12 lanes rounds.
Fantastic scores anyway! Congratulations Michael!
