Austrians Heschl and Schatz pick gold in junior cup

Austrians Heschl and Schatz pick gold in junior cup The final day of Juniors World Championships 2008 turned into a golden celebration of Austrians, who missed all medals in the team competition. Simon Schatz of Austria won the cup competition of male juniors, and Karin Heschl of Austria won the cup of female juniors.

A slightly less serious part of the tournament (compared to the team competition), the cup finals offered the usual set of tragic misfortunes and beautiful Cinderella stories.

The best players of 8 preliminary rounds, Sascha Spreier of Germany and Jana Nakládalová of Czech Republic, survived one cup round, before falling from the competition.

Jennifer Helm of Austria was the Cinderella of the weekend, rising to silver podium from 14th place after 8 preliminary rounds. She lost the final match to Karin Heschl of Austria (ranked 9th after preliminary rounds). Simona Handlová of Czech Republic (ranked 4th) won the bronze match against 15th ranked Sabrina Bürki of Switzerland.

In male juniors Maximilian Krämer took bronze, being ranked 13th after the preliminary rounds. Krämer won the bronze match against 3rd ranked Gerrit Britz of Germany. Gold went to Simon Schatz of Austria (ranked 8th), who won the final match against 2nd ranked Filiph Svensson of Sweden.
