German ranking January 2009 published

Germany 29 Jan 2009 at 07:09 | Published by: JJM | Views: 9460 | News search

German ranking January 2009 published German Minigolf Federation (DMV) has published the national ranking of January 2009, including 4234 competition players (men and women, all age categories).

Number one in German ranking 1/2009 is female senior player Andrea Reinicke. Number two in the ranking is veteran player Bernd Kunz, and number three is female senior Gabriele Rahmlow.

Active national team players are not found near the top of the ranking: Alexander Geist is ranked 34th, Marcel Noack 37th, Marco Balzer 39th, Harald Erlbruch 48th, Alice Kobisch 65th, Alexander Junkermann 112th, Bianca Oberweg 116th, Nicole Gundert-Greiffendorf 190th, Nicole Piechotta 243rd, Walter Erlbruch 304th, Daniel Klosek 603rd, Marco Templin 646th and Achim Braungart-Zink 718th.

German Minigolf Federation is still seeking new and possibly better ways to calculate the ranking list. The practical problem is, how to compare the results of players who play competitions on different minigolf courses, in different weathers, and against opponents of different skill levels.

In france, we have only 15 courses for the competition (filz, eternit and concrete). We had establish a system to compare the results obtained on each course in function of the difficulties of the course. The system is not perfect, the results depends on the weather but each year, there are not big surprise when the final ranking is known. The best players who palys at least 7 tournaments in the year are in the top 10. I don't know if the system could be done in germany but when I saw the final german ranking, I think there are something to do to improve the system

In Italy we have the same problem for the national overall ranking, because we have to compares results from players that participate in competitions not at the same time/place. We use a system that compares your score with the course PAR.
PAR is calculated on each course on the basis of the last 10 tournaments played on that course.
Probably it's not a perfect system but I think it's quite good enough. I think that when players participate to competitions played in different courses at different times, the only way you have to compare results is to see which score they play relating to which kind of course they are playing on.

Minigolf is trying to get more into media...so what´s best, to publish a ranking that is kind of a joke, or not publish one at all?

The German Federation was offered to buy a license of the Swedish HCP-online system but turned the offer down. I cannot say why they said no, but when you see the result of their internal work, its easy to make a conclusion that they havent found a working model. The real key to a working model is the terminology around course PAR that exists in HCP-online. Not all is in favour of this model, but it is actually working in reality.

I am pretty surprised to see how many players you have in Germany. Not just members, but actually players who played tournaments/competitions. Wow.

Of course this is not a good situation. I think they should have the same kind of system as what they use in Sweden. This is the system to see who really is best.
