Jay Klapper wins PPA Northern Open by 8 points

United States of America 17 Aug 2009 at 11:53 | Published by: JJM | Views: 9143 | News search

Jay Klapper wins PPA Northern Open by 8 points Jay Klapper won PPA Northern Open in Columbus, Indiana, with a rarely seen win margin 8 points. This was his second victory in the three PPA National Tour competitions that he has played this year. Nate Nichols was second with average score 24.88, and Tim Greenert was third with average 25.13.

Jay Klapper’s winning score 191 (average 23.88) is said to be the best ever score in a PPA tournament of 8 rounds. This might be true for competitions that include exactly 8 rounds, not more than that. At PPA National Championships 2008 Kevin Lacey played 12 rounds with average 23.67, Brad Lebo played his first 8 rounds with average 23.50, and Andy Coradini played his last 8 rounds with average 23.25.

Jay Klapper now leads the money statistics of PPA National Tour 2009, with total prize money 2,650 USD. In the season rankings he is only 9th, however, because he has played one tournament less than the other players on top of the rankings. Gerg Ward leads the season ranking, Greg Newport is second, and Jeff Carr is third.

Hey Kevin,

I would have liked to have been there, but two things stopped me....I couldn't justify the cost to myself, primarily traveling alone, AND that the last time I played there, I did not play it all that well (for an APA), let alone for pro division.

Still hoping and planning to get down to Orange Lake though. Hope to see you there, if I don't see you before then.

Hey Dennis,

Too bad you couldn't make Columbus this past weekend. I think a lot of people thought that this course was as easy or easier than Richmond, VA. The scores were much, much lower in previous days and weeks. Two weeks ago Nate shot 195 in the 8-round Legends Classic with 5 bogey strokes believe it or not. He led the field with aces and bogies outright in that tournament, although it was a smaller field.

For whatever reason, probably warmer weather and humid conditions, the scores were much higher than normal. The temperature and scores were a little lower on Sunday, mainly due to the 9am tee-off.

What was amazing was how low Jay scored in these conditions. Just about everyone else struggled on one day or the other. Nate's score of 199 was solid on both days, but Jay's 191 was really impressive. The overall scores were AT LEAST a stroke higher than normal. If the conditions were ideal, Jay would have probably shot in the mid-180's or possibly lower.

Thanks for the article.... A couple of notes though: First, the location is Columbus, Indiana, not Columbus, Illinois. Second, the PPA keeps records for both full tournaments and for consecutive rounds. That is, for an 8-round tournament, you could possibly break, tie, or come very close to the record for an 8-round tournament, AND for 6 consecutive rounds, 4 consecutive rounds, 3 consecutive rounds, 2 consecutive rounds, and/or 1 round.

As mentioned in the article, Lebo and Coradini shot 8 rounds better than Klapper's score, but Lebo's and Coradini's scores were part of a 12-round tournament. Not only that, but Klapper's record was shot on a higher scoring course than Lebo's, Coradini's and Lacey's (Richmond, VA). That's not to take anything away from those three putters, as those are awesome scores, but Klapper's score is the new record for an 8-round tournament.
