Odense, day 2: Germany in deep trouble

German women had a day full of trouble in Odense, already from the very first moments in the morning as Alice Kobisch opened the day with 50 points at the felt course, including two full jackpots of 7 points. Germany’s catastrophic first round on felt, 133 points (average 44.33 per player) turned their gold hopes into a desperate battle for survival on any medal position at all.

Sweden is marching to gold, and Austria has a firm hold on the silver medals, 19 points ahead of Germany. 19 points is not very much at these difficult felt and eternite courses, so Austrians will need to play some very balanced game to keep their silver position.

Germany in third place is within reach of the silver medals, but also within attacking distance from Netherlands and Switzerland in tied 4th place. If either of these two teams will have the day of their life tomorrow, Germany can potentially be outside of the medal podium for the first time since 1979.

In men’s team competition Sweden keeps marching to a certain and fully expected victory, with the best total score on both minigolf courses, felt and eternite. Germany started the day with two excellent team rounds, taking a safe distance to Austria in third place. But in the 6th round Germans lost 8 points to Austrians, keeping alive the theoretical chances of Austrian silver medal hopes, at these minigolf courses where 20 points can come and go in a short moment.

Switzerland and Finland will fight for the honour of 4th place in the team competition, which will certainly be valued by whoever gets this position in the final results. Italy has fallen a bit far from 4th place, but they still have the chance to surprise Finland for the 5th place. Denmark and Netherlands will decide the 7th and 8th ranks tomorrow, maybe not exactly what Dutch players were thinking about when they travelled to Odense for this competition.
