Currently there are 131 professionals and 130 amateurs signed up in the PPA. JJM is accurate, players determine themselves which classification is best for them. There are very few amateurs who could compete effectively at the professional level. High school student Brandon Davis from Ohio is an exception. He would not be able to compete for his school's golf team were he to join the professional ranks...The PPA National Championship week starts on Monday, September 14th. The National Championship will be 12 rounds over three days starting on Thursday, September 17th. The tournaments are being held at Orange Lake Resort in Kissimmee, Florida, USA.

The distinction between "professional" and "amateur" players is a tradition of golf. Basically it means that "amateurs" cannot play for any money prizes, other than small compensations for travel expenses. "Professionals" have the right to play for big money prizes. In minigolf this difference is not so big, because the money prizes are quite small also for "professionals" nowadays -- but 10 or 30 years ago the PPA money prizes were huge, 50,000 USD to the winner of national championships! Win one competition, and you can live with it the whole year. That was truly professional minigolf.

Both two American minigolf federations, PPA and USPMGA, appreciate golf traditions quite much, and therefore use also this "pro" / "am" distinction. Practically it means that all new players are first "amateurs", and play for smaller money prizes. (The top 9 money prizes in this amateur category were nearly identical, 1st got 40 USD and 9th got 35 USD!) After a player has proven his skills in competitions, he can apply for a right to play for bigger money prizes in "pro" category. I think it is also possible to never apply for "pro" status, and always play in "amateurs", no matter how good you are. (This is different than in Europe, where the national federation decides what your skill category is, and you cannot play in other skill categories than your given skill category.)

At least one golf player is playing the PPA league as "amateur", even though he is a very good player. He cannot become "professional" PPA player, because his college golf team approves only amateur players, so he would lose his place in the college golf team if he is registered as a "professional" player in PPA minigolf.

Hi Jeffrey!
As an outsider regarding PPA ...
I followed the results in your series about the last tournaments. There are always about 50-60 players competing. How many members do you have in the PPA in total?

And what about the professional status - looking at the prize money tells me - even the best guys have to do something else to pay their bills. So what is the difference between amateur and professional!?

btw. the courses look really good playable and also the results are telling that the very skilled players are able to gain advantage...

Greg is having an outstanding season. He tied the 6 round PPA record that was set on this same course last year by Jeff Carr. If you look at the attached photos, the course played this past weekend was the Red Course. Next stop is the Week of the PPA National Championship held in Kissimmee, Florida. The tournaments start Monday, September 14th.
