Karin W and Anders O top the new World Rankings

Karin W and Anders O top the new World Rankings

The Swedish couple representing Uppsala BGK Karin Wiklund and Anders Olsson is on top of the new WMF World rankings presented today.

It is always interesting when the first ranking after a major championship appears and this year’s winner Sandra Weaver and Jonas Gustafsson is now number 3 and 14. Its maybe a bit surprising to see that the new World Champion is only at position 14, but the way the ranking is calculated it’s not so strange since Jonas have been away from the international scene a while and hence lost ranking points.

In the ladies the former number 1 Lisa Berger-Rella is now in spot 2 and Sandra Weaver is in spot 3. So all WC medalist is in the top 3.

In the men’s category Swiss Mike Mann is in second spot (a bit surprising) and Walter Erlbruch of Germany is in spot 3. The other medalist from the Odense WC Filiph Svensson is not even on the list since he is still a junior until New Year and Harald Erlbruch is in spot 7.

In the juniors category the top positions in the ladies side are tied between Jana Nakladalova of Czech Republic and Anna Nitschke of Germany. On the boys side the top position is for Vit Skaloud from Czech Republic.

In the seniors category the top spot in the ladies side are hold by Maria Fuschlberger of Austria. On the men’s side the top position are occupied by Reinhard Schuster of Austria.

True, but the problem was a high price ticket, not the ranking system itself. Nobody had anything to complain about the system, only about its price.

I think WMF were offered a version of swedish rankingsystem HCP-online, but turned it down. But I may be wrong about this?

I think that John's idea of a data bank of all players from all countries is a good start. Each player could be identified by the license number (in his/her country) preceded by the code letter of the country.

I imagine the making of the rankings is tough work. I gave up trying to make a list of the mistakes regarding the Portuguese players. I will be happy if there aren't any mistakes among the first ten or so, the others are only there to enhance and give credit to the top positions. But on the other hand we already knew the first placed are really good players. I think a better ranking system is yet to come.

Players in many countries use sometimes a nickname, sometimes a real name, and sometimes the name is accidentally misspelled. Gaby Rahmlow / Gabriele Rahmlow / Gabrielle Rammlow. When the player is famous enough, people at WMF can make corrections as they make the list. More unknown players are quite impossible to get correct, without a license number shown in the results list -- and in the best case, a global ranking server that includes all players of all countries, and imports scores of competitions from standardized Excel or BangolfArena files.

With Portugal (a small country) are so many errors...that I can't predict the number with bigger countries...

In the senior ladies list, Bernice Thors is listed also as Bernice Olsson, which was her earlier name....
