September 12, 2010, Boothbay, ME – There were no surprises atop the leader board at the 2010 Maine State Open at Dolphin Mini Golf in Boothbay, ME. Ten rounds were played over two days and Peter Gilchrist of Maine won his 10th Maine State Open in convincing fashion, taking over 1st place after the first 3 rounds and never looking back. Peter shot an impressive 334 over the ten rounds to win by 22 strokes over Elmer Lawson of Pennsylvania. Peter won a $1,000 and a Dolphin Mini Golf gold jacket. Relative newcomer Jordan Jones took the last medal in 3rd place with a 359. Payments were made to the top eight competitors, with 4 through 8 as follows: Nancy Gilchrist (361) in 4th, Evan Goodkowsky (362) in 5th (winning a one hole playoff), Christopher Baum (362) in 6th, Dusty Stoddard (369) T-7th, and Pat Sheridan (369) T-7th. Twenty-eight players competed in the pro division this year.
This year also marked the 20th anniversary of Dolphin Mini Golf. As a result, owner and tournament organizer awarded several different special prizes, most of which earned $20 and revolved around the number 20 (and none of which were known to participants before the end of the event). Awards were given out for: shooting a 20 on the front or back nine in one round; shooting a 20 on both the front and back nine in one round; coming in 20th place after each flight of rounds; and shooting an entire round without an ace among others. In another unsurprising feat, Peter Gilchrist also was the only winner of the annual “Hole-in-One on 18” contest run after the tournament each year. Any participant who aced 18 in the contest wins $100.
