Sweden and Germany Atop 2016 Senior European Championships

Lahti, Finland – While the German youth were sharing the spoils of success with the Czech Republic in Austria, the German seniors were battling it out with the Swedish seniors in Lahti. The 2016 Senior European Championships, organized by the European Minigolf Sport Federation (EMF), were held at the Laune Minigolf Center from August 10 through August 13th and the tournament saw 84 participants representing 11 countries battling on both eternite and felt.

In team competition, Sweden and Germany split the winnings as Sweden took the men’s division and Germany took the women’s division, with the other side taking second in each of those divisions. On the men’s side, the scores were close on felt but Sweden pulled away with a dominating average on eternite. Third place went to the Czech Republic men who tried to keep it close with Sweden throughout the tournament. The women’s team competition was much tighter as the German women edged the Swedish women by just 1 stroke. This was an amazingly close score for 8 rounds with 3 players each (plus 1 substitute), equaling 700 total putts (average 29.17 strokes per round).

In the individual competitions it was no surprise then when Sweden and Germany dominated the podium, but varying who was on top depending on the division and tournament. The Swedish men swept the stroke-play podium, which isn’t surprising given their overall team win. Daniel Ågren took the overall first place for the men with an incredible 302 over 12 rounds and having the best average on eternite and second best on felt. However, when it came to match-play, German Markus Janssen nipped Nikael Karlsson of Sweden in the final match to take the top spot. Janssen and Karlsson had finished tied in stroke-play in the middle of the pack and had a great run in the match-play format. In the women’s division Alice Kobisch of Germany and Annelie Lundell of Sweden made it to the podium twice. Lundell took the stroke-play championship over by shooting a 334 and finishing 5 strokes ahead of Alexandra Von Dem Knesebeck of Germany. Kobisch would come in third in stroke-play but find her way to the top of the podium in match-play beating teammate Andrea Reinicke, who finished 5th in stroke-play, for the gold. Lundell finished third in the match-play.

Stroke-Play Top 3 Men (after 12 rounds):
Daniel Ågren (SWE) - 302
Stefan Bjork (SWE) - 313
Morgan Munter (SWE) - 315

Stroke-Play Top 3 Women (after 12 rounds):
Annelie Lundell (SWE) - 334
Alexandra Von Dem Knesebeck (GER) - 339
Alice Kobisch (GER) - 340
