I started playing minigolf in 1989 at the age of 13 in Uppsala. In 1993 an injury ended my career in American Football and with that I got a lot more time for minigolf. In 1995 I had my first real season with Uppsala's first team and by the end of 1997 I had taken over as the club's closer. I played for the Swedish national team from 1997 to 2006 and also in 2009, collecting several medals, among them 3 World and 2 European titles for team and 1 World and 1 European individual championships. In Sweden I have 8 individual titles and 10 league titles. Last but certainly not least I have together with my excellent team mates managed to secure two European Championships for clubs.

Prague is a really nice city. Awesome public transportation, beautiful old town and great cheap food and drinks. My only problem is that I don't drink beer and has to pay the same price, sometimes even more, to get a coke that's only 60% of the size of the beer. Having been to Prague at several different times during my life, I've started to get to know some parts pretty good.
When I got the news that the organizers had changed the hotel I was happy since the new hotel was close to a place which I know well, called Anděl. That came in very handy indeed on Thursday night when we arrived. Having set some sort of minigolf time record from the airport to the hotel (1h10m from landing to check-in), Anders and I marched straight down to Anděl for a dinner at TGI Friday's.

The course is in the mall Galerie Butovice, which is 2 tram stops and 5 underground stops from the hotel. The time door-to-door is, when you're unlucky, 25 minutes. The location inside the....

The best competition of the year is just around the corner. With only one and a half day until I get into the taxi in the middle of the night (0435) to get to the airport it's still a lot to take care of.
Today I've used my breaks to the max. During the morning break I printed out the form with the lineup (5 different pre-printed and 1 empty) and made the layout for the putting plan. The lunch break was used to buying a First Aid kit (we seem to need it....), new wallet for the club cash and to exchange a pile of cash to put in the wallet. That brings us to the afternoon break and the printing of the maps to get from Schwechat to the hotel and to the course. Maybe I should've done all this earlier, but I simply haven't found time for it until today. In addition to all this I have managed to collect 650+ balls from the Post office and also packed the club utility bag.
I started my own packing yesterday and found out that vacuum packing bags are great!! You can fit a lot....

Having practiced close to 20 hours spread over four days and also played 7 competition rounds in Elitserien, I think I'm close to having a decent opinion on the concrete course that WC 2011 will be played on.
The first impression is that the layout of the lanes are done well and attractive, but the placement of 16-18 confuses me a bit. The course is located nicely with a lot of open grass outside the fences, but that also gives the wind a lot of different directions to come from. Without a lot of windshields the course is almost unplayable as a lot of the slow shots are played in a 90 degree angle of the normal wind direction. Hopefully a lot of tents for the players will block out the wind, the chance of playing WC completely without wind is not realistic.
The lanes are pretty easy, but as you might guess the wind can mess up the results a lot. I will give you a quick guide to the lanes and the lines we played in Uppsala.
1. Left board, mainly left side of the....

The end

Having enjoyed my best golf play the last couple of years during the team competition here in Odense, I got my first experience with the now not so new match play finals. I've been very negative towards this system before. The first of two main reason is that removing half the lanes for the individual competition is not fair to the players that are good on the other half of the lanes. The second reasoning is that two or three bad shots could destroy months of preparations even if you have a commanding lead going in to the finals.
Both of these reasons came in to effect in my loss to Allan Schwab this morning. I was 38 shots better that Allan during the team competition but during our match we played equal in shots (and lanes won) on the felt and he won one lane on a badly played eternite. He played really good felt and while I made two 2s (boxes, won and twin gate, lost) and one 3 (hole in a slope, lost) and aced the rest, it wasn't enough since my three best lanes weren't....

Lane selection part 3 - felt
04 Aug 2009 at 11:04 | Posted in: General | Views: 4277 | Comments: 4
Felt will probably be the biggest and toughest course type as the quality of the lanes differs a lot. There a 32 lane types (should be 33 as #32 twin gates actually is two different lanes depending on where you put the openings) and as with the eternite lanes I removed some right away and divided the rest into groups.
I removed middle hill (#12), side hole in slope (#17) and ditch (#21). Middle hill is not interesting, side hole and ditch are normally bad.
I came up with a total of 7 groups for the felt lanes.

Group 1 is made up by straight shot flat lanes with green; single gate, double gate, boxes, optical illusion, lightning, cross, flat channel and twin gate. The twin gate here is like the one in MunktellArenan where the middle part is close to 5-10cm wide, also referred to as “goalie” in Sweden. Both single gate and double gate would be placed in the next group when they are in a hill. I would order the lanes like this: lightning, boxes, optical....

Lane selection part 2 - eternite
04 Aug 2009 at 09:47 | Posted in: General | Views: 2834 | Comments: 5
With the shortest segment over I will now turn to eternite. I the WMF-rulebook there are 25 different lanes (more to come after the meeting in Odense probably) and some of them can be easily discarded from cup-consideration. But first I must once again question the decision to use the 9 lanes with the highest average. Why should a really difficult lane be used? Why shouldn’t a difficult lane be used? If we have to select 9 lanes based on the average then why not choose the 9 most average lanes statistically? Why not use lane 6-14 based on the average? Then you won’t have the 5 easiest lanes and not the 4 most difficult lanes either. This could of course also be used on felt.
But I still believe that lanes should be chosen based on how good they are, regardless of the average. Let’s go!
I will start by removing all more or less pointless lanes. Jump with net, labyrinth, double wedges, middle hill, volcano, V-obstacle, V-obstacle with sloped circle.
Now I will place....

Lane selection part 1 - concrete
03 Aug 2009 at 09:27 | Posted in: General | Views: 2750 | Comments: 2
Last night between 3 and 5 a.m. while trying to persuade my daughter to go back to sleep I started thinking about the selection process for the lanes for the cup in Odense. I began to divide all lanes into different categories and soon realized that I need the list of approved lanes to complete my thoughts. I swiftly moved from felt and eternite to concrete where the lanes are easier to remember. :)
I will post my thoughts in three parts, since very few of you would survive reading everything all at once. In this blog I will take care of my thought on the selection of concrete lanes. I’m not quite sure how they are chosen at the moment, I actually don’t have a clue, so there’s a slight possibility that I end up with the same idea that is in use.

My philosophy for the lane selection for concrete is that the lanes that are in the cup are the 9 best lanes. I define a good lane as one where the shot can be controlled to almost 100% and that the shot should not be to....

Bingo!!!!

Today we finalized our bingo of gold medals in Elitserien. A bingo, of course, is five in a row and with this we have nine titles since we were promoted for the 1996 season. It's quite amazing when I look back at that first year and then compare how much we have improved. Enough of the memories, back to this play this weekend. I didn't decide to play until one week before the competition since I really want to spend as much time as possible at home with my wife and daughter. As luck would have it this weekend was played in Jönköping only 50 km from where my wife's parents live, and with this we decided that I would play, but not stay with the team in a hotel. I practiced two hours for myself on Wednesday and skipped the team's practice one day later, which were a good choice since the practice on Thursday almost rained out. When Friday came I actually had had more practice than my team mates, not exactly what I had envisioned.
At the practice on Friday I felt some pressure to....

4 weeks and counting
07 Jul 2009 at 17:23 | Posted in: General | Views: 2802 | Comments: 1
I've never been one that sleeps more than necessary, or maybe I should rephrase that. I've never been one that goes to bed earlier than I deem necessary, I have always had the skill to sleep way past 8 a.m. :) The last 4 weeks has taken my life, and sleep, into a different category thanks to my beautiful little daughter. She has, like most infants, her mind set on not letting any of her parents sleep more than 2,5 hours in a row during the night. Thanks to my wife, I do get to sleep most nights since I'm not physically able to feed the little being craving our attention.
We actually went camping this past weekend in Jönköping which happened to be where the 2nd competition for the national were taking place. My wife was very kind in agreeing to this so that I could participate in the competition. Since I'm not playing in the Swedish Championships it was very important to play this competition to get as much consideration as possible for the Sweden squad for Odense. Now I'm....

The season has begun!!!
27 May 2009 at 14:08 | Posted in: General | Views: 2520 | Comments: 0
Finally my season has started. For the first time in my whole career I didn't play a tournament before the first league round. To say that I felt a bit rusty is a huge understatement, I didn't have that many good shots at all during the first day of practice. Fortunately my form improved during the second day and during the competition it was ok, but not much more. Thankfully I can still play straight even when I'm not playing good.
I actually dreaded the first time I was going to have to close out a match and after a five (5!!!) on the last hole in our second match, which we won pretty easy, the feeling didn't improve. I wonder if I ever have made a 5 on that type of lane before..... Anyway, we played very well as a team for most of weekend and came away with 6 wins and 1 loss. The situation I was hoping to avoid came in the last match against Jönköping. We were down from the start and things were looking dark indeed. Thanks to some mistakes from their side and fewer from us....

Selecting players
04 May 2009 at 10:19 | Posted in: General | Views: 2527 | Comments: 3
The season here around Uppsala started for real this past weekend. Nine Uppsalaplayers were in Norrtälje participating in the cup and the first qualifying competition for Cup Stockholm. Anders Olsson was victorious in both competitions with Sture Molin also reaching the 4-man final on Saturday in the cup and Thomas Pölder ending up 2nd in the A-class on Sunday.
I didn't play since we've just moved and there's still a lot to do with the bathroom and of course the normal unpacking of way too many boxes. I have actually practiced something like 25-30 shots outdoors so far this season, with some more coming today in the rain. It not quite like when I was a junior and could practice in almost any weather, now it's more a practice session out of necessity. After all the first league weekend is coming up in two weeks time and it would be nice to have my normal feltform, which shouldn't take that long to achieve.
Speaking of the league I also have the nice task of selecting....

Marathon
06 Apr 2009 at 11:39 | Posted in: General | Views: 2539 | Comments: 4
Obviously it wasn't very difficult to have a 19.00 average at the Marathon. I played really well to get a 19.00 avg on my own and thankfully Anders played one shot better than me and we ended up scoring lower (18.96) than the goal I set for us. :)
It's a really strange that I probably have played my best eternite-tournament ever on the 4th and 5th of April, not exactly when I'm supposed to play my best minigolf. It's a pretty easy course and I've played there a lot of times, but I think the biggest part is that I actually had good concentration on almost all of the 234 holes I played.
Anyone who know me good knows that I normally have a very tough time beeing 100% satisfied with a competition. Having played 19.00 should probably be an exception to this, but I can think of more than a few situations where I was just stupid for playing the shot instead of braking my concentration and starting all over. I will give you a couple of examples of this.
Optical....

Out of fuel?
16 Mar 2009 at 14:10 | Posted in: General | Views: 2430 | Comments: 7
It seems that I'm not the only one out of fuel as my fellow bloggers join me in the failure in delivering texts on a regular basis. I have tried to write something for quite some time now, but there's always something coming up with more urgency. Now I've reached the limit and really felt I had to produce something. I'm afraid it won't be as creative as I hope my previous posts have been, even though I have some nice background tunes in GnR's Estranged at the moment.
JJM's blog on the fusion MOS really caught my interest. This fusion version would be a nice replacement for some of our lanes on the adventure course, since a "real" MOS costs a lot of money and we wouldn't have a chance to replace all 18 lanes. The fusion type is much closer to the course we have now which is really just a standard competition felt course with easier and hopefully funnier obstacles. The boring part is that it's still just a felt course. If there were a possibility to get two or three of these....

Practicing felt
20 Feb 2009 at 10:08 | Posted in: General | Views: 4635 | Comments: 16
A week later than planned I will now, as promised, share with you how I normally practice felt. Of course the practice at the beginning of the season is not the same as the days before a competition. It’s pretty obvious that you can’t place foreign object in the course while you are preparing for a competition.

First out is a favourite of mine, which I used a lot before I could master both spin shots. What you need is a straight lane with a gate and a piece of smooth wood. Place the wood in the opening and make sure it covers about 40% of the opening. Place the ball all the way out on the tee, on the same side you have covered (wood covering right side, place the ball to the right), and make spin shots trying to ace the hole. After a while you switch sides and covers up the other side of the gate and play with the other spin. Make sure you have chosen a lane with a green that doesn’t fall to either side. When Karin and I used this method a lot of years ago we made it a....

Obstacles

Obstacles
"Obstacles are what you see when you’re not focusing on the target." Stop for a moment and think about it… Good. Hopefully some of you see my point with my statement. It’s possible to relate this to some other sports and even driving a car. I read in a motor magazine that if a driver stares at the white lines in the middle of a road, then he will automatically slowly inch the car closer to them. To compare it to other, more fun, aspects of life we can take Ice Hockey, Floorball or Football. When I played Football back in the 18th century, I was told to never look at the goalkeeper. Being both young and small, I never questioned my coach and just did as he said. I scored quite a lot of goals, but after a couple of years we actually had to do some cross-country running, which never have been my cup of tea. Some years later I employed the same technique in Floorball, again with pretty good success. During the latter parts of the 98/99 season, I had scored in every game, but against one....

Problems in Uppsala
30 Jan 2009 at 12:44 | Posted in: General | Views: 2592 | Comments: 5
Why would I report any internal problems in my club here? Sorry to disappoint you all, but it's no problem in the club. The problem is of a more difficult kind.
Most of you have never been to Uppsala and even fewer of you have been to our course. We have a total of 54 lanes (18 felt, 18 eternite and 18 adventure felt) and a big nice house. With a lot of visitors each year which play, eat and drink for us to get a nice little profit. We can afford to pay travel costs, food and hotel for all players when there's a team competition even in these tough economic times we're in right now. The thing that might put a wrench in all this is that the city wants to build a bridge over the small river that runs 10m outside our course. Another bridge is nice, but not when it's planned to be built right through our house.
We understand that something has to be done with the traffic situation, but why not place the bridge and road just outside our course, where there's a lot of unused....

Under Pressure
27 Jan 2009 at 12:49 | Posted in: General | Views: 4636 | Comments: 18
”Things get worse under pressure”, at least according to one of Murphy’s associates. But to be serious, do things actually get worse under pressure? Is it harder to make the shot on lane 18 because it’s lane 18? Is the opening smaller when you have to ace it to win?
Well, the last question is at least easy to answer. Of course the size of the opening doesn’t change, that would be quite odd. But the first two questions are somewhat tougher to explain. During the years I’ve been wondering why different players play better at certain positions in a team. We are all individuals and thus we perform and react differently to different situations. If you take me as an example, I almost certainly will not play as good as a starter compared to closer. Why is that? I would like to think that I’m good enough to be able to cope with both situations, but I sort of know that it wouldn’t work out as well if I was to start. I know that I’m rarely good at the beginning of a tournament; the....

The red line.
19 Jan 2009 at 10:45 | Posted in: General | Views: 4200 | Comments: 16
I’ve heard that it’s always harder the second time around. Finding a topic for today has certainly been a lot harder than last week, but hopefully you won’t get bored to death before you reach the end of the post. If you start to lose feeling in any of your limbs, please take a pause or stop reading all together. That being said, let’s get to the topic.

The borderline. A little piece of red tape or red line drawn straight across the lane, which the ball has to pass in order for you to be allowed to play from another position that the tee. On three of our systems there’s not much to discuss. On concrete and eternite you can continue playing once you have passed it, even if the ball comes back out and to rest on the “wrong” side of the red line. You just position it on the red line, or on the repositioning line, and continue playing. When playing on an adventure course, at least those I’ve played on, as long as you have hit the ball you continue where it stops.

European Cup 2008 - the fastest international tournament ever played?

European Cup 2008 - the fastest international tournament ever played?
This is quite a special situation for me. Having played last as a closer for almost all teams I’ve ever been a part of since 1996, going first is not something that I’m used to. Hopefully I will do a better job going first as a writer than as a player (2 career starts, 1 substitute).

I was hoping to be able to write my first blog post with a sixth straight gold medal in the Swedish Cup, but due to a more or less abysmal quarterfinal against Tantogården 1 I’m sitting here with noting more than a decent personal average from the competition. Congratulations to Tantogården and their new more international team. It might sound that I’m complaining, but that’s not the case. You see, I’m rooting for the New York Yankees in baseball and right before Christmas we signed the top three free agents at a combined salary of an astonishing $423,5 million. Not wanting to bore everyone out just yet I'd like to borrow a line from John Cleese, or any other member of the Flying Circus....
