There are about 300 recesses on one golf ball, and thanks to them, the ball flies three times farther than a smooth one. ... Balls of the same size...

Experiment in odense
26 Aug 2009 at 11:58 | Posted in: General | Views: 3045 | Comments: 7
Hello
During the last 10 days, I was in Odense to play the world championships. As each time since 20 years now, I can see the differences between the best players of the world and the french players.

I think there is a real difference between players as CJ Ryner, Harald Erlbruch and french players, but I think the differences could be lower if we played in the same conditions. During my carreer, I met some international players during tournament, without coaches, .... and the differnce between their and me was not so huge. I can also took the example of Csaba Palinkas. His level increased really quickly since he played for WAT21 and during the world championships in Odense, he played some balls prepared by the austrian team and he could have information for the putt coming from austria.

The level of Jeason Weaver is also higher and higher and it's probably due to a lot of time of training but it's probably also easier to progress when you play on felt course with swedish coaches.

During the WC, The swiss headcoach Wolfgang Wicki help me on lane 6 on felt course. He spend only 10 minutes with me and I probably wins betwwen 5 and 10 shots on this lane compare to the training.

The swiss federation propose in WC to help in the future the small federation. Germay, austria and sweden agreed with that. But what is a small federation? France of course need help to progress, understand the lane better, understand our ball mistake and understand how to prepare the balls. I think Sweden can also help great countries like italia on felt course for exemple.

It's not so esay during the WC training to ask to the foreign players or coaches what balls they play and what is the preparation of the balls. I have more than 2000 balls but by coming by car, I take only 400 balls and no one was good for the looping (my maier classic 1 roh and my boF Nestler was at home). So, I think it could be good to have in the WC or EC a group of 4 independant WMF coaches coming from germany, sweden, austria, swiss, available for all the team ans able to tell us what balls is played by the german or the swedish lanes on one lane and able to explain us how to prepare the ball.

During the competition, I played with a japanese player. He obtained good results on a lot of lane but took 7 each time on 2 or 3 lane on eternit and it's probably due to a problem of balls. I explained to him with my low expreiment than a maier classic 3 was probably better than klickers on middle hill and blitz on eternit and I would be happy if a german or a swedish player explained me my mistake when I Played the looping. Another exemple, The swedish and the german ball on blitz was very good. It was not so esay to ask the name of the balls during the training to use the same. I ask to Peter Nordin at the end of the competition and he give me an answer but it will be easier for everybody if there are special coaches for all the small nations on the lane able to help us

This year in odense, Wolfgang Wicki help me on lane 6 on felt course and on lane 7 on eternit. Perhaps it's not so easy for a german or a swedish player to tell me "your ball choice is very bad" because they dont want to seem superior. But without help, the level and the order of the nations will be always the same. Of course, having a good ball is not enough and I'm sure that the german and the swedish players will continue to win the championships even if I play with their balls but it's interesting when you practice a sport to increase your level, with training of course but also by understanding our mistake and it's difficult in the small minigolf countries to improve this point. Sometimes, we have the chance to have an austrian bundesliga player in french team (Raphael Maier) and I hope in the future he will be able to help us to understand our mistake even if it could be a few disappointing for top player to see the low level of the french players. So, if you want to help me about the ball, the preparation or the game in Predazzo next year, I will be very happy, not to win the tournament but just to progress.

I would like to say that there are many players from Sweden, Austria and Italy who are willing to come out to you and point out mistakes on ball selection, line selection and will answer the questions you have or will help to find best possible ball from your own collection. Pasi Aho has been very helpful for years and many other people. It probably would help if playing lines, ball lists would be available ahead of time (which had been done in the past but this year it was impossible) at least to achieve better training time use for everyone. WMF coach availability for inexperienced nations would be absolutely great.

Maybe coaches shouldn't be allowed. Not sure it would help the smaller nations but it would save time and money.

Hi Jay
For me too it was a pleasure to play with you and to see your progress. It was also a pleasure to play with Ivan Macho who is a very good czech player. I also see the progress of Danilo Pavlic (who also play in WAT21 if I dont make a mistake) and of course of Csaba Palinkas and Adam Fazekas.

During the WC, I think it's not so easy to ask information about the balls. I know some players and I can ask easily. For exemple, it's Paolo Porta who give me the name of the green ball for the looping (boF Nestler). I Know I can ask information to Wolfgang Wicki and Martin Hug from switzerland. Now, I know I can ask information about the balls to you and Peter. I met Peter 3 years ago in SEM 2006 in luxemburg where I was coach and I think it's really esaier to speak with the players at the SEM compare to the WC, it's more cool........

Around the courses, there are sympathic coaches as mathias Reiche but even if he is sympathic, it's not so easy for me to ask him during the training what kind of balls the german team plays on a lane and the preparation of the balls.

And of course, it seems impossible for me to ask the questions to Walter erlbruch, Harald Erlbruch or a lot of swedish players because they seems to be in their world, 100% in the training and in the competition and not so open to speak. I know it's probably a wrong opinion but it's what I feel. There are a real relation between the german, swedish and austrian players beacuse there are several meeting during the year (nations cup, WC, training camp, europa cup). In france, without money, we can participate only to the WC and it's difficult for us to meet and to know the other players. It's easier to become friends with players of the small countries. For exemple at odense, we spend a lot of time with the japanese team, we change gift, email, .... and it's more difficult with great nations.

Of course, I will be really happy to learn ball tips on this website. Michel Rhyn in the past explain me some tips but I have a lot to learn and it would be magic if one day, at the WC, a player like CJ Ryner, Anders Olsson or a german player make a round with us before the competition and tell us our mistake of balls and give us tips to improve our level. It's perhaps a dream .........

Regards
Philippe

Interesting blog! Good points and ideas Philippe.

I agree with Joel. Just ask. As for the lanes here John, there were very few that needed to be temped in a special way. Usually the player says how you should temp and prepare the ball anyway. The way I have learned the most (and so much in a short time) is to ask and watch the best players. Just observing them is very underestimated as an educational tool.

Thanks for the compliment Philippe. It was a pleasure to play with you. I haven't played very long but I do try to train as much as possbile and learn a lot about balls and technique. I feel it is important...

Finally, a suggestion for this website. Have a weekly article in a special section about balls and techniques. The Swedish Minigolf Magazine has done that before with great success and good tips. I'm sure that there are a lot of players that could write ball tips, etc.

JUST ASK! ;-)

Having a good ball is not enough, you also need a coach to keep the ball in perfect temperature (compared to the weather), check the air humidity, maybe use some chalk on the ball...

Minigolf lifestyle. I would rather try to market a golf ball game, or a felt game with H4, H1 and clicker. Sometimes less is more.

I think if you would ask a Swede of what ball they are playing, they would probably tell you.
