Shhh...Library Minigolf Part 6

Shhh...Library Minigolf Part 6
A common hole set-up at a library event  (Photo by Linda Sadlouskos)

It's that time of year in the United States when the weather has been cold and many local libraries normally look for ways to remind their communities that they are a great place to pass those cold, dark hours. This year, with the spread of COVID-19 we're going to unfortunately see many of these events canceled (thought hopefully some are just postponed) but plenty have already occurred in the past few months. It seems like every year we see more of these events being added to the calendar and several of the ones we come across have now been running strong for several years. In Part 5 of this series, we looked at the events happening in 2019, highlighting a couple that made some significant funds, a library that returned to the minigolf well and one in a school library that awarded students.

In this article we'll look at a variety of events spanning the past year of library minigolf, with a focus on some articles that showed a lot of pictures of these events. As we mentioned above we hope this current blip just postpones these types of events because it's clear from these articles that communities love them!

We start first in Pittston, Pennsylvania at the
Pittston Memorial Library. While the article doesn't mention how much was raised, and notes there was an adult only event, the big focus here was the impact on the young kids who came out to play. Not only were they excited to see the set up and enjoy the library in a different way, but it was noted that for some this was their first exposure to miniature golf given a lack of course in the area (a shame in our eyes!). This makes the event serve even a bigger purposes than helping the library, it's also helping exposure to the sport in general.

We stay in Pennsylvania, heading over to Scranton (a familiar place for any of you fans of the US version of The Office) and the
Scranton Public Library. It's a short article with no information about how much was raised but it does come with a nice little video showing some of the holes and folks having fun participating at this community event.

Next on the list we travel to Illinois and the
Yorkville Public Library, where the Friends of the Yorkville Public library put on a Minigolf "FUN" Raiser in January. While local businesses sponsored the holes, instead of theming around their businesses they were themed to various entertainment ideas. No word on the amount raised here but judging by the lines reported to get in and the fact that they are on their 7th year of the event only leads us to conclude that it's probably a success. There are some great pictures in the article of folks of all ages enjoying the putting.

Our penultimate set of links for this article brings us to Ruby Sisson Memorial Library in Colorado. They have a
Lanes and Links event which is the first time we have seen library minigolf combined with library bowling! The first article talks a little about the event and has some pictures from a past event, and this article has pictures from the current year event. We're always impressed with the creativeness of the holes at these library events and adding bowling into the mix is such a great combination (and of course is something many entertainment centers around the world knew to combine as well).

The last link we have doesn't have much in the way of an article but has some great pictures from a library minigolf event back in 2019. This one was held at the
Reuben Hoar Library in Littleton, Massachusetts. There's some great shots of hole designs, folks of all ages playing and even some local government officials getting in on the action to support their community!

With many minigolf events on hold or canceled around the world, we'll work on bringing you more articles highlight some of the great ways our sport has been used so stay tuned to this page! As always, if you know of library events that should be highlighted send us an email with links to the articles and we'll do our best to get them in a future article.
