There are about 300 recesses on one golf ball, and thanks to them, the ball flies three times farther than a smooth one. ... Balls of the same size...

Champions Minigolf game V 0.0
06 Jun 2009 at 11:05 | Posted in: Personal | Views: 3299 | Comments: 8
Today is the birthday of Tetris computer game (as you will notice, if you open the Google search engine). Also minigolf is an evergreen bestseller theme in the computer game business. Always there, in every game console, and in every online game service.

I looked at some old stuff on my computer hard disk, and found a game sketch that I made in 2002. The game project was titled "Minigolf Championship Tour B-E-F Combi". In early 2000's it was a growing trend in international minigolf. All big countries moved to B-E-F combi in their national leagues. But today talking about "3 playing systems" is just so obsolete.

I changed the stinking project name to "Champions Minigolf version 0.0", and published it at www.minigolfnews.com/games/champions_minigolf/. The game includes three lanes, and it probably works with Internet Explorer only. (To function in other web browsers, some details in the code would need some updating.) The lanes were 100% straight in my original sketch from 2002. How boring. So I pumped them a bit...

Everyone who visited Rahola eternite course at Nordic Championships 2009, will know how to play the Optical Illusion. Take some spots to the right, aim enough to the left, and play with 17%...19% force. (Also directly to hole is possible, but damn difficult. You need to play nearly from right corner, and play with force 16%. 15% is too slow and 17% is too hard for the direct shot.)

Lane 2, tabula rasa, breaks a bit to the left. Quite tricky to play, because the green breaks so little. Lane 3, gate, again breaks strongly to the right. Don't take the ball too much to the right, otherwise you will easily get "same-side".

I have never played Putt-Putt in my life. Except now as I made the 9 lanes for this game. Based on some Putt-Putt photo galleries and competition videos found on the Internet.

My first impression about Putt-Putt is that the wide open lanes give a rich variety of different playing options. I could easily find 7 or 8 interesting playing lines for every lane. (When I made the felt course for this game, I avoided lanes like Boxes, Optical Illusion or Fishbone, because they have one or two playing lines only -- as this game does not include spins.)

Putt-Putt courses have been produced since 1954. For many Americans, Putt-Putt tradition is as holy as the Bongni beton standard is for Swiss minigolfers, or eternite standard is for German minigolfers.

WMF has been keeping 3 European playing systems in global monopoly position, de facto, because they are holy to some European minigolfers. This attitude does not help much in global growth. The world is full of perfectly good minigolf courses. Minigolf sport can start growing to the world, if we stop trying to force the burden of European traditions on the shoulders of other nations, who already have their own equally valuable minigolf sport traditions.

Feels a lot better with the putting now.

I updated the code so that putting sinks with twice harder force than shots from the start area. Still the center of hole sucks twice harder putts than 25% edges on both sides.

Coming up: some Putt-Putt

I don't know how hard you are putting... the hole sucks quite hard at center, but 25% edge on both sides sucks only with a half slower speed. (You see from the start shots, how hard force stays in the hole.) If I make the hole suck better, then many start shots would be downgraded from "difficult" to "quite easy"...

I think it is quite realistic, but the greens are very crooked, of course. They are designed to be interesting for the start shot, to give nice options for hole-in-one. You should get a good idea where the green breaks and how much, if you think about the start shot, where the ball was expected to go and how.

Later I might add the option to play with 100% straight lanes (that will get boring quite quickly), or with randomized breaks, hit and see where the lane breaks today.

You could make it easier to get the ball in the hole. I have had several putts where at least 3/4 of the ball is inside the edge and still doesn't go in. I made 4 sevens after getting to the green in 1 or 2 shots.

You already have a different ball (and different carpet friction) for the felt lanes. On felt the ball stops rolling a bit faster, bounces less from walls, and takes wider angles when hitting walls or obstacles. (But the ball doesn't take any spin in wall hits, as you may have noticed at "side gates", for example. This is version 0.0 anyway.)

I guess that I will have quite many home nights during this summer with the beibushka, so I could do some Putt-Putt lanes, after I have finished 9 x felt. I will skip beton lanes for now, because most of them have quite difficult shapes, a big work to code how the ball should move there.

A really nice game. I have only played a couple of lanes, but it's fun. When will we be able to select different balls? :)

I didn't plan to continue making the game, when I wrote this blog. But I did so anyway, because I cannot go anywhere from home these days. Waiting for our Oliver Alex to be born on any day, my wife doesn't let me play minigolf competitions (Finnish beton champs are this weekend).

The sloppy window lane is fixed now, with a steeper uphill that makes the direct shot more difficult.
