There are about 300 recesses on one golf ball, and thanks to them, the ball flies three times farther than a smooth one. ... Balls of the same size...

Financial problems
19 Mar 2009 at 19:47 | Posted in: General | Views: 1348 | Comments: 4
This year is the first year that the Dutch minigolf federation gets in financial problems.

Since the start of our federation in 1980 we get money from the national olympic committee. With this money it was possible to send national teams to European and World championships for juniors, general class and seniors. At first there were no problems using this money as honest as possible for the three classes. Some ten years ago the money was only allowed to the general class. But our treasurer was able to do it in a way that we could send all three classes to their championships, only for the seniors was it not possible to get all the money. The seniors had to pay more and more of their own and now you don't see the best seniors in the European chamionships, only the players that can afford to go.
Last year we got a letter of the olympic committee that they stopped the moneyflow to our federation in 2009, because there were less than 24 countries competing the last world championships in Steyr and Canegrate. Fortunately we could persuade them to think it over and during the assemblee we realised that the committe gives us this year 50% of the money we got last year. This means that we still can go to the coming championships, but we are not able to stay in a expensive hotel or a some cheaper hotel for the gerneral class. Besides that I don't think we will have a seniors team going to Lamego. Maybe three, four players will go to those championships.
For next year (2010) the committee will give us only 25% of the money of last year. That year it will be much more difficult to send a team tot Predazzo, becase of the prices of the hotels in that region.
In 2010 they will see if there are more participants during the championships in Odense. If there are no more than 24 countries, than I'm afraid that in 2010 it will be the last time a Dutch national team will participate the championships and only a few players who can afford it to play the World championships in Stockholm.
I hope that we can welcome more than 24 countries in Odense, so you can see the Dutch team in coming years at the championships.

Just for the information, don't think that the Dutch players didn't have costs for participating at EC en WC's. There already was a part which had to be financed by the players themselves, without the money from the national olympic committee, it really becomes an expensive "hobby" in my opinion.

But we will see what the future brings..

Italian Federation has never got any money from the national olympic committee (or other government institutions).
Most of times money coming from the registration fees of players and associations were used to pay travel costs to national teams (but very rarely all costs had been covered).
Most of times players have to pay part or all the costs with their own money.
This year we have found a sponsor that will cover all costs for the three teams. We hope it will go on also for next years events.
Surely, if a championship is being held in a far place where you need to go by plane (like it could be Russia for JWC 2010), it would be very difficult for our Federation to arrange a team.

Only one information Santa: about EC 2010 in Predazzo I know that organizers are trying to arrange some good agreements with hotels so that the price for rooms won't be too high. I think the costs won't be higher than when you go to any place in Switzerland, Norway or other "expensive" countries.

Travel costs are not the problem of Netherlands 2009 alone: they are a global problem, in all years, if we think about countries outside of Europe, as the tournaments are always arranged in Europe. I wrote about the problems of global travel costs in one of my earlier blogs.

A bus, train or cheap flight from Amsterdam to Stockholm costs less than 100 EUR. Think about Japanese or American players... they have always paid their huge travel costs from their own pocket.

Finnish Minigolf Federation has never paid more than 50% of the travel costs for adult or senior players (if I am not wrong). It sometimes happens that a good player will say no because he cannot afford to travel, and then the national team gets someone else who can afford to travel or whose club can afford to pay the travel costs.
