The Russian Championships were this weekend at the eternit course of RGUFK in Moscow. It was to be a historic event with good results and for the first time blue eternit results made by a Russian player.
In the men’s class Sergey Fokin and Igor Pantelimonov, both Moscow players, was in the lead for long. But on round Sergey Kovylyayev made the first ever blue round on this course of 19 and put some pressure on the two in the top.
But Fokin and Pantelimonov could keep away from Kovylyayev to take gold and silver leaving Kovylyayev with bronze. After a bad start by Pantelimonov on the last and 12th round it was in the end Fokin who could win the gold after two years as silver medalist.
In the ladies class it was to become a battle between last year’s breakthrough juniors Polina Mogilevskaya and Yulia Korytina. In the 11th round Yulia made a first historical perfect 18 round of a Russian player, only 15th years old, and took also the lead by 3 strokes.
But maybe Yulia was a bit too excited over what has happened since the last round became a weak 27 and hence Polina could get up on level after 12 rounds, leaving the title to be decided in Sudden death. And there Polina was the stronger of the two juniors and took the gold.
