Dominating is not a word you hear often when talking about winners of the major USPMGA events. These tend to be nail-biters down to the final couple of rounds as the best putters in the world compete. Randy Reeves turns that on it's head this past week as he won the USPMGA Masters by 16 strokes over Greg Newport. Reeves shot an impressive 347 over 12 rounds (28.9 average) played on the two Masters courses - Hawaiian Rumble and Aloha Minigolf. This included a course record 25 in the 9th round, which helped him pull ahead of Matt McCaslin who had made his way to the top of the leaderboard during day 2. Matt would finished tied for 3rd with Brian Johnson. » Final Results
Sixty players in total competed in the the pro division over the 3 day event in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, with additional players in the other divisions. It was the largest field ever for a USPMGA Masters. Excluding Randy's margin over 2nd place, the competition was very tight throughout the rest of the field. Only 10 strokes separated 2nd from 20th place at the end of the twelve rounds. For his efforts, Reeves collected $5,000 (~4,550 EUR) and payouts when down to 32nd place for the tournament.
Reeves impressive run also helped him win the team competition with Jay Klapper. With a 731 combined total over the 12 rounds, they squeezed by the team of McCaslin/Johnson by 2 strokes in the final round to earn an additional $200. The familiar name of Olivia Prokopova was atop of the women's division, with Karl Lakos winning the super seniors division and Reeves also cleaning up in the seniors division. Brian Katrek shot an impressive 396 to win the amateur division.
The next major for the USPMGA will be the 20th annual U.S. Open held at Bluegrass Miniature Golf in New Jersey on July 21st & 22nd, 2017. This is second time Bluegrass Miniature Golf will hold this event.
