Bernice Thors of Sweden was finally awarded with a gold medal in Match Play. For many years she have been showing that this is her game (silver in 2008, bronze in 2009, quarter final in 2010) and now she finally made it all the way.
Bernice was meeting last year’s winner Heidi Stricker in her first match. The was a return game from last year since Heidi made Bernice loose in the first round for the first time last year. This year Bernice was keen on not letting that happen again and Bernice won 5-3.
In the next round she won against Elisabeth Kammerer, Austria by 4-1 and the in the semifinal she won over yet another Austrian, Johanna Knotzer by 4:2. In the final she was meeting Ornella Campora from Italy. Ornella won over home favorite Greta Jansen, which later secured the bronze.
In the final Bernice had a stable 2-0 lead with two lanes to go, but two slightly too hard strokes invited Ornella into the game and the final went to a sudden death. On the third sudden death course Bernice could secure her long awaited gold medal.
On the men’s side the Match play started with an embarrassing organization blunder. 9 out of 16 games turned out to have been wrongly matched. After jury decision these matches needed to be played again, this time against a new opponent.
Karl-Heinz Gewert started his day by winning against Philip Busche and Mario Schneider. In the semifinal he won against Sweden’s Peter Nordin who later secured the bronze.
In the final he meets the stroke play gold winner Martin Lundell of Sweden. Martin who had a chance of becoming historical as the first ever to win 3 gold medals in a Championship had to see himself beeten by 3-0 by Gewert. So gold for Karl-Heinz Gewert and silver for Martin Lundell. Martin can still go home with the title of King of Rozemaii with 3 medals (two gold and one silver).
The arrangement has been very hard to follow online and still this neither evening nor do results of the ladies match play re available on the arranger’s homepage. In the men’s match play only the two first rounds are shown. Also no lane-by-lane results have been used. This is still today not a mandatory requirement from EMF or WMF. Most of the information about what happened has been spread by people on site to other people that have updated Facebook accounts.
Minigolfnews will update with links to the full results as soon as they are available.
