The miniature golf club Bad Homburg in the German federal state Saarland hosted the German Miniaturegolf
(Eternit) Championship from the 11th to the 13th of August. The Homburg club did a good job and provided
an eternit course in perfect condition and an excellent catering for more than 100 minigolfers.
First there were 6 qualification rounds to play. The best 50 % of each category qualified for another
3 rounds, and the leading trio had to play a final round. Men and women as well as the seniors in two
different categories competed in this championship. It is also the senior’s team championship
on eternit in Germany.
It seems to be quite an easy course as the motto of this championship apparently was ”Blue
is beautiful”. This does not mean that anyone was blue (in German it means: to be drunk) or
was feeling blue (maybe only those who didn’t achieve a blue round), but there was a remarkable
number of blue rounds (below 20) played in this championship - 17 x ”18” and 59 x
”19”! The first three in the men’s category even had a blue average in 10 rounds.
It’s also interesting to look at the statistics. Because of the extraordinary low scores there
were long rows of aces. Most aces in a row achieved Sascha Spreier and Gerrit Britz: 40! This is more
than two rounds of aces in a row. The most ”difficult” lane was the loop with an average
of 1.66, the only lane with more twos than aces throughout the tournament.
The winner of the women’s category was Heike Listander-Teupe from Elmshorn with an average of
20.6, followed by Britta Brandt-Lagerquist from Kiel and Anke Willenbockel from Peine.
The results of the men’s category were just unbelievable. An average of 22 after 6 rounds
was not sufficient to reach the intermediate rounds safely. At the end even an average of 20 was
not enough to join the winners trio. With 2 perfect rounds of 18 and 5 rounds of 19 Sascha Spreier
from Mainz won, with an average of 19.4. The local player Gerrit Britz, the 2009 Youth European Champion,
came 2nd with an average of 19.7, followed by Robert Hahn from Ludwigshafen with an average of 19.8.
The senior’s men category was won by Günter Schwarz from Kerpen, the DMV sports director,
with an average of 20, only 1 shot ahead of the local player Roman Münch who came 2nd and 2 shots
ahead of Jörn Osnabrügge from Dreieichenhain, reaching the 3rd place.
The winner of the senior’s women category was Marion Willenbockel from Peine with an average of 20.8.
Even in the senior’s category II (players aged from 58 on) excellent scores were necessary to win.
Birgit Stiebeling from Cuxhaven won the senior’s women category II with an average of 22.7, and
Winfried Dümmler from the local club Homburg won the senior’s men category II with an average of 20.5.
There were 12 senior’s teams fighting for the team cup, and Ludwigshafen defended their title and
won with a team average of 21, followed by the local team from Homburg and the team from Dreieichenhain.
As a final statement one could say: If you have never played an ”18” in your life go to
Homburg/Saar and give it a try there!
