Miniature Golf and Bettering the Community - Part 4

Miniature Golf and Bettering the Community - Part 4
Example Charity Set-Up Unrelated to Article  (Photo by The Putting Penguin)

It's been a few months since we visited our series on how miniature golf is being used around the world as a tool to help raise funds for causes and community organizations. You can visit Part 3 of our series to take a look at our last installment. The winter months (in the US) saw no shortage of these events and as we roll into the more traditional minigolf season for the Northern hemisphere there's plenty of events on the schedule.

We'll first take a quick look back to November in the US where we have a combination charity/educational event held by the
University of Minnesota-Duluth's American Society of Civil Engineers. While the video accompanying the article doesn't feature minigolf (but instead talks about the Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald of folk-song fame), the article does feature the partnership of local students and engineering firms to create a 5-hole course and raise funds for student trips. Along with artists it's hard to argue there's a better group of people to design some miniature golf holes than engineers.

Moving into the heart of a Midwest US winter, we have the Skywalk Golf Classic. You can see both a short
video discussing the event as well as a gallery of pictures. This was the 32nd iteration of the event and the most recent 5 years have supported the First Tee programs which is an "international youth development organization introducing the game of golf and its inherent values to young people", which is something that is close to our hearts as we look to expand our sport to youth as well. The pictures show some unique golfing using a hockey stick (not a first for us) and some wonderful outfits.

At a more pleasant-weather winter US location, Arizona came out for the
Lauren Terry Memorial Miniature Golf Tournament, which raised funds for the Candlelighters Childhood Cancer Foundation of Nevada. This event was held on a more "traditional" miniature golf course and drew crowds looking for fun and a great cause.

Finally, we look forward to an event coming up in a few weeks in the American South. The
7th Annual Peanut Butter Cup Mini-Golf Tournamentt is being held May 19th in Louisiana and it combines a variety of great things - a minigolf tournament, raising funds for charity and celebrating "Halfoween" (half way to Halloween). The winning team gets a peanut better cup filled trophy (in the running for the best trophy in sports) and there will be "living" obstacles on the course (a dream many of us wish we could fulfill during a tournament). The 10-31 Consortium will be the beneficiary of the funds and their goal is to not only preserve Halloween traditions and folklore but to support safe Trick or Treating and local community organizations.

Once again you can see that minigolf hits a variety of interests - engineering, cancer funds, youth golf programs, Halloween - and continues to expand it's reach to all aspects of our society. If you know about miniature golf being used to help support a community event, let us know at patsheridan@minigolfnews.com
