There are about 300 recesses on one golf ball, and thanks to them, the ball flies three times farther than a smooth one. ... Balls of the same size...

A place for organizing club at the ECup?
21 Jan 2009 at 11:21 | Posted in: Rules | Views: 1829 | Comments: 6
Hi all,

as second post on my blog, I would like to share with you some opinions about a matter which has been recently discussed here in Italy.

You know that ECup 2011 has been assigned to Vergiate.
During discussions for this application we talked about the reasons why the organizing team is actually not automatically qualified to the event.

The discussion came about a (reasonable, in my opinion) specification from GSP Vergiate, that explained how it would be much better for them to be sure to have their team participating at the event.

Well, actually Vergiate has the strongest men team in Italy by far. But you always have to qualify yourself through tournaments and you can never be sure to get the pass until the end of the tournament.

After all discussions, Italian Federation (FIGSP) sent a motion to EMF/WMF to discuss about the proposal to give the rights for a place to the clubs that organizes ECup.
Let's see which will be the answer.

But besides official decisions, I would like to hear also your opinions here.

I think that giving a place to the organizing club to the ECup would be extremely correct, for several reasons:
- when you host an ECup, it is not so nice for local people/public to watch the event without supporting the local team
- if you have the local team participating, it would be surely easier to get more help (money, etc.) from local sponsors, local administrators, etc.
- all in all, people from organizing club are much better stimulated to do their best if their teams are involved.

Honestly, I don't understand why actually the organizing club doesn't have an automatic pass to take part in the ECup (if they like to).
I don't find any big problems in allowing one more team taking part in it, both if it's a good or bad team. It is just one team more playing.

I find it quite strange because in all sports the organizing club/nation is usually allowed to take part to the event. And it's very normal...for reason I've explained before.
Think about a football world championship without the organizing nation!!

I think that allowing the organizing club to have a sure team in the ECup would also let have more applications to organize this kind of event.

What do you think about that?

I think that's a good idea. One more team capable of fighting for the top? So what? Anyone afraid? The sponsorship advantages would be by far more favorable. And the home factor, in the sports point of view is not always so evident as we saw last year in Hilzingen.

As usual i agree with ThomasD. I always do, is 1 or 2 times now Thomas? lol. Jokes aside i do agree with ThomasD. And i am not too sure that it is that big of an advantage to be the home team all the time. It can be the opposit and put alot of pressure and due to that you will not play as good as others.
And as Paola said it can be a possitive thing when you approaching sponsors and media and can say that the local club is represented. All and all its a good thing in my eyes.

@C-J
Of course the risk of losing "organizing powers" because some potential organizers will play exists. But the possibility to have your own team in the ECup that you organize should not be forced. You can choose, if you want also to have a team playing or not. There could be some organizers that send their application without any interest in presenting a team, but I think that many others could be interested to organize if they can be sure to have their team participating.

As Thomas said, I think too that positive aspects would be bigger than negative.

U might loose organizers like C-J describe, but it must be much easier to work against media and sponsors and so on if u have a home team participating. I would say it's more pros than cons.

I think that if you have the home team automatically in the EC, that team will be a lot better than it actually is, especially if it's indoors. I'm not saying this is a good or bad thing, but let's take the EC in Eskilstuna as an example. If one of the clubs in Eskilstuna would have played they would probably have ended up getting a medal. We in Uppsala have close matches with the home team in Eskilstuna most of the times.
Possibly the organisational part benefits from a home team participating, I'm not sure. Remember that 11-15 potential organisers will play instead.

I can see the argument of "neutral ground" as one that is discussed to be sure that the best team in Europe wins. I.e. when Uppsala won in Eskilstuna it was more or less home ground for them, but I think it only helped them to win by an extreme margin. This year they won again in Germany. But Vergiate at home ground will be really interesting to follow against the best teams. They are capable to win at their home ground but it will not be a given like Uppsala in Eskilstuna.
