There are about 300 recesses on one golf ball, and thanks to them, the ball flies three times farther than a smooth one. ... Balls of the same size...

Minigolf is dead, long live minigolf....

Minigolf is dead, long live minigolf....
I guess translation is not necessary......

OK, my turn, I guess Carl-Johan didn't really do us other bloggers a favor when he fired away his first post.

I think it was briljant and set the standard awfully high for preceding posts. If I were to comment on the main issue he discussed I would probably fill this page several times and bore you out totally. At this point, my only remark will be that we see things very differently in the world of Minigolf. Quite obvious of course, and no reason for problems, if it wasn't for the situations and discussions that arise around rules and sportsmanship almost every single year. I have played internationally since 1990, with many years of absence now and then though, main reason is sadly just the topics discussed. There are many feelings and thoughts hidden beneath the surface here, some of them must be let out in the open for the good sake of minigolf.

Enough with that crap, let's talk minigolf instead!

We are all in this for the love of the game. The different balls with its enticing colors make us shiver of anticipation to try them on different courses. We buy them in really sick numbers (my opinion, I have bought ~10 balls since 1990, serious!), but we love them. We are happy with our minigolf balls, 3D, NiFo etc are happy that we buy our new minigolf balls, some even pet and polish their minigolf balls at home.

BUT, is the sport of minigolf "happy"?!

New players from new nations must feel like shit when they arrive at the course and notice that the 19 bags in the center of the course belongs to 6 players. Top that with the arrogance of those nations during practice when they sometimes try to hide their balls or shots, cut in lines etc. Part of the game, or sick and bad for the sport, I don't know, you figure it out!?!

I guess I have to save some topics for later, so this marks the end of my first post, enjoy!

Greetings

hansson olof Andersson Olsson from Finland.....

PS. for you old people who remember the film Cool Runnings, about the Jamaican Bobsled team, have you ever wondered why the bad guys are always German or Swiss? even in sports.....;-)

Blondie, You are correct about the balls. Nobody in the United States (except maybe you) would know what to do with WMF balls.

Jeffrey, Lebo pets at home different kind of minigolf balls, he does not have WMF balls and does not know what to do with them.

MOS with just a golf ball is one way to stop the ball frenzy, but then we play a different game. Some like it some don't, but I think Mr Ex-President is close to the truth with his MOS-predictions to some point.
But I am not so sure whether those tournaments will be held by minigolfclubs or even within WMF.....

And, look out for those Classic 1's in Odense this year....;-)

@ Haazeman

Back to your post...you told that you've bought ~10 balls since 1990...well I can beleive you! I still remember you in Bad Münder, where on felt you played the same ball (was it a Maier Classic 1?) on about the 50% of lanes... :D

I agree with you that the big number of available balls doesn't help "young" minigolf countries to fill the gap with bigger countries...but as in any other sports it's quite normal that stronger countries has better material. Other sports have probably setted some rules to allow that the material gap between big and small team becomes smaller. Probably the same should be done in minigolf sport...but how? It is not an easy topic...
Probably increasing the number of tournaments on felt and MOS (where the ball is not so important) would help...

I was wrong. Markus in Geldrop - oops!
I don't really believe in national stereotypes.
I think Erik was right, some nations are just not quite so approachable.

I actually grew up in Switzerland (at least lived there when I was a kid), and I am still a nice guy... :-) just like all Swiss minigolf players I know.

In the seminal 'Grudge Match' Channel 4 - John 'Big Top Ted' McIver is seen inspecting, rubbing and cleaning his balls.

Hi Hans,
Do some European putters really pet their balls at home? Lebo is the only American that I know does this.on a regular basis :)
