There are about 300 recesses on one golf ball, and thanks to them, the ball flies three times farther than a smooth one. ... Balls of the same size...

reporting live from WMF Media Conference....
28 Mar 2009 at 16:10 | Posted in: General | Views: 3580 | Comments: 13
WMF has gathered representatives from the media committees from Germany, Austria, Denmark, Sweden, Portugal, Italy, Switzerland in Offenbach, Frankfurt.

We are right now in the middle of a workshop where every country presents their work on media and development of the sport in their countries. Right now mr Pirovano tells us more about Italy and their situation.

I will not go into any secret details here, but we are mid-way through the workshop and I must say that I am impressed what has been done last years in the other countries. Especially in Germany and Austria, where major TV coverage and a very amusing film with "the Brothers" have been created to name one example.

Sweden might be the leading country when it comes to the game today (OK, Germany is close...) but when it comes to working with the media and developing the sport we are clearly falling behind.

But, I am very glad I took a 6-am flight this morning to Frankfurt. This session is very helpful and inspiring for me and the Swedish federation since I will be involved in planning the WC 2011 in Stockholm, Sweden.

We have a mutual understanding in the Swedish Federation that WC 2011 should be something extra, that is our vision and we look forward to present it to you all in a near future!

@JJM

Stylish clothes banned? There are loads of stylish sportclothes to play in. Compare it to other sports and you see that we have a lot more possibilities.

This is how I imagined the situation to be in your country, in reality. (I have heard quite many "conference speeches" in my life.)

In Portugal we have some programs with schools where little competitions are being played by the students. So, the number of 1000 is maybe the number of students that played some lanes with two or three balls in their schools. But how many will continue as true players? The number of players of the schoolboys class is growing but not in the reason of 1000/150. They are now 18 players, in 2008 they were 16 and in 2007 only 9. The work in the schools is working but the numbers are very different from those which were presented. They really exist but only the future will say if they will be players as us or only boys that played it once…

Cool clothing in start... pity that stylish clothes are banned in rules.

All I can say about the portuguese reality is that a big effort is being made working with the schools and there's a lot of young players taking part of the national beginners championships. How many of this will keep palying? I can't say, but some is better than none. Wouldn't you agree? I'm not aware of the details and so I can't give you numbers, but trying to get the kids playing anything other than football at their sports class, is always welcome.

I am just curious about the details, what exactly has happened, what is happening right now, and what will happen in future.

What can we learn, if we don't know the details?

wrong focus and viewpoint John!

How has Portugal managed all this?
what can other countries learn from this project?

We need to get people to our courses and to our federations and any effort done is good in my opinion!

The website of Portuguese Minigolf Federation lists hundreds and hundreds of new junior players, in the member statistics. (You will need a Portuguese dictionary to find this page from their website.)

At least they have succeeded doing what golf federations do in all countries: "list all visitors of the course as club members". Would be interesting to hear more details (from Portuguese minigolfers for example):

- how and why these new juniors joined a minigolf club?
- did they get a discount price for membership (or free membership)?
- do they own a minigolf putter or other minigolf equipment?
- how many of them will play in official competitions?
- etc.
