The 2011 British Minigolf Association season got underway with the BMGA Star City Open on Sunday 23rd January 2011 at the 36-hole Adventure Island Mini Golf course at Star City, Birmingham. The three-round, 54-hole tournament was won by Oxford’s Michael Smith with a score of 89 (-19). Canterbury’s Marc Chapman was runner-up on 91 , with Germany’s Martin Stoeckle third on 93.
Smith, a member of the Kent Minigolf Club (KMGC), made his debut in the 2010 BMGA National Open at Star City and by season’s end was ranked number one in the BMGA Season-Only Ranking list.
Commenting on his victory, new BMGA Star City Open Champion Michael Smith said “I am thrilled to have won the tournament, particularly as there was a strong field with several players in excellent form. Martin played a great last round and Marc is a truly fantastic player, so to come through and win gives me a lot of confidence for the rest of the year.”
34 British Minigolf Association (BMGA) Tour players competed in the event on the two 18-hole indoor Adventure Minigolf courses. Other prize winners on the day were James Trubridge, Richard Skeggs and Jas Kukielka who were the top-three ranked players in Category 2. The Top Novice player was Charlie Goss, with Ian Turnbull the Runner-up Novice player. The Aces Championship for most holes-in-one was decided by a play-off between Dudley’s Paul Johnson and Oxford’s Chris Smith after both players had hit 13 aces in the tournament. Johnson won the sudden-death play-off at the third extra-hole.
BMGA Chairman Sean Homer said “Thanks to John Whitehead and the team at Adventure Island Mini Golf at Star City for their hospitality and support and for giving us another terrific competition in Birmingham.”
With the BMGA Star City Open competition, the Adventure Island Minigolf course at Star City has now been the venue for three national ranking minigolf tournaments, having hosted the BMGA’s first-ever indoor minigolf tournament in January 2009 when the BMGA Star City Open was won by Birmingham’s Chris Harding, followed by the 2010 BMGA National Open, also won by Harding.
The BMGA Tour consists of Minigolf ranking events that take place at Minigolf, Crazy Golf and Adventure Golf courses across the UK. Last year there were 22 BMGA Tour competitions and a total of 15 players lifted BMGA Tour titles.
