Today on Friday were the finals of the stroke play Championships in Stockholm. As yesterday there was drama and amazing play. And maybe most significant of all, there was a huge crowd of people. Several hundred people where spectators all over the place and they were showing loud engagement in every stroke that was played.
In the ladies class it was to become an all German struggle for the gold. As some many times before Bianca Oberweg was going a close battle for the gold. This time it was with her teammate Stephanie Kern. With 3 lanes to go Bianca was in the lead by one stroke, but at lane 16 Stephanie was making it equalized by an ace. Then they shared 17 and 18 and both ended up in 251 strokes. So a sudden death had to be played for the gold. Stephanie was acing lane 1 on concrete and when Bianca made a two the gold was Stephanie’s. Third place went to young Karin Heschl from Austria.
Together with Karin Heschl there was recently a new ranked WMF no 1 was and that was Filiph Svensson. Since his strongest surface is normally felt, not many considered Filip to be one of the favorites for the stroke play title. But Filip was going to prove all the doubters wrong this Friday.
With one round to go he was 3 behind a really sharp playing Marco Henning of Germany. And the start of the last round was not the best for Filip. But then he started a mighty finish and the crowd alongside the course more or less lifted him through all the lanes onwards. With a finish of 10 aces on the last 12 courses he overtook and passed Marco by two strokes for the victory. Second was Marco and third was Dennis Kapke of Germany.
Tomorrow on Saturday are the Match Play Championships.
