A 10 round miniature golf tournament is like a horse race, sometimes it’s a close pack to the finish and other times a clear winner emerges early. Josh Tiberio was this year’s prize horse going wire to wire in the 20th Anniversary of the Maine State Dolphin open held at Dolphin Mini Golf in Boothbay.
Twenty-four competitors vied for the top 8 money spots over two days this past weekend. After the Saturday morning 3 rounds Josh had a 1 stroke lead and continued to carry that lead through the next 7 rounds, finishing with a 339 and winning by 2 strokes.
That victory netted him $1,000 and the coveted “blue jacket”. The top two pulled away slightly from the rest of the pack but it was close in the money positions with 3rd through 8th place being separated by only 11 stokes after 10 rounds. This year’s competition was extra tough as the 8th place score of 365 would have been good enough for 2nd in 2012.
Owner Lee Stoddard (who finished 4th after a one hole playoff and playing in his own tournament for the first time in 20 years) noted that the 20 years of the tournament has been the “best years of my life” and put in a special prize for whoever finished 20th. While most eyes were on the top of the leaderboard there was plenty of jockeying towards the bottom for that extra spot. All proceeds from the Maine State Dolphin Open are donated to Shriner’s Hospital for Children. Lee noted that with this year’s donations, over $90 thousand has been donated in the 20 years of the tournament.

Nancy Gilchrist – 354
Lee Stoddard – 359
Elmer Lawson – 359
Raynor Lynn – 364
