On the second matchday, Sunday April 12th 2014, of the Landelijke Hoofdklasse (LHK), the highest minigolfcompetition in the Netherlands, MGC Oirschot took a important victory on the renovated concrete course in Geldrop. At the end of the day MGC De Vrije Slag, last week in Drachten on second place, only came in fourth and lost important matchpoints by this result.
The concrete course in Geldrop, where the 2006 European championships were played, has a totally renewed surface. The courses are painted red and the repositioning areas are white. The methods of how to play remained more or less the same, but it played a lot slower than before. And this had it’s consequences in the averages of all players.
MGC Drachten took the lead after round 1 with a 182, mainly caused by a 26 by Jarno Bottenberg (only 11 years old, younger brother of the best “man” of the day from last week Youri). Leader MGC Oirschot started poorly with a round of 195 and was in sixth and last position.
But MGC Oirschot didn’t panic and tookover the first position on the leaderboard after a solid 181 in round 2. Drachten play their worst round of the day with a 204 and they went down to third place. MGC De Vrije Slag was now second, only 4 strokes behind the leaders MGC Oirschot.
The third round caused some changes in the standings. MGC Zoetermeer (only fourth after 2 rounds) played 180 and passed both De Vrije Slag and Drachten and became second, with only 2 strokes behind MGC Oirschot. So it promised to be a final round with tension.
But MGC Oirschot made no mistake in the last round (181), Zoetermeer played 182, causing that Oirschot won their second match in a row and took a big step towards the Championship. Runner-up from last week MGC De Vrije Slag finished fourth, which means they are now 4 points behind MGC Oirschot and equal to MGC Drachten.
Next match is in Appelscha on felt on May 4th, maybe the hometeam of MGC Appelscha will be able to leave the last place in the table.
