During this last weekend, a little over halfway between Porto and Lisbon, in Porto de Mós, took place the last competition of this season – The Portuguese Cup.
This is a feltgolf course and, just in case it would be too tiresome for players, some rainy clouds decided to show up and keep them company for whole weekend, providing for plenty of interruptions. The plan was to play 3 preliminary qualifying rounds on Saturday, after which 8 players from the youth and women categories and 32 from men would qualify for the matchplay on Sunday. However, due to the heavy rain, the first two categories qualified after only two rounds and the third qualifying round for men was played half on Saturday and half on Sunday morning.
Even with all the delays, by 8 pm on Sunday, we had three winners!
In youth, for the second time in a row and a few days after bringing home the gold on the individual national championship, Fábio Lima (CM Porto) got the Portuguese Cup after playing a close final (4-3) with Pedro Cruz (CM Porto), who was playing his first Portuguese Cup.
As for women, the cup went to a junior player, Luísa Lobão (MC Lamego), leaving behind Lídia Santos (MC Portugal) on the final, and Juventina Silva (CM Porto), who conquered the first place on the preliminary rounds and made her way up to the semi-finals.
In the men’s category there were also a few surprises with a podium made of two thirds of junior players: André Machado (CM Porto), who made it up to the semi-finals, and João Miguel (MC Portugal) who lost only to the winner, João Nabais (MC Portugal), who also conquered the Portuguese Cup for the second time in a row.
Despite all the rain and subsequent delays, we were provided with a competitive weekend and some good minigolf.
Also, please note that the winners from the two first categories, Fábio and Luísa, will be playing in Lahti, this summer.
