The indoor league of western Sweden has been going on for many years during the winter season. Generally the league has been played on two felt courses and two eternite courses in a Round-Robin format. With eight teams in the first league that gives you 28 games in the winter season preparing for the important summer season. The format of the league is that the teams play with five players and one possibility for a substitution per game.
Apart from the best teams in the west there are also two teams, Skoghall and Jönköping, from the Swedish top league called Elitserien and also Nässjö, a very competent team from the second league in Sweden. Last year the Swedish champions Skoghall won this series.
This year the big news was about the first round that would actually be played on Askims indoor MOS course. The course is quite small and built in the form of a landscaping with quite steep hills surrounding the lanes. The reaction to playing on this course was quite positive and many good players took the chance to participate in this round. There were about 15 winners and medalists from well-known MOS competitions like USPMGA Masters, World Adventure Golf Masters and British Open so the starting field was quite experienced and strong. In addition, there was also other players who have won big titles in the other disciplines.
The favourites before this round was of course Kungälv with former winners from all the three above competitions including Hans Olofsson in a comeback at a team level. Askim, the home team, with three players directly from the successful Swedish WAGM team this year were also expected to do well during the series.
The first round started with expected wins for Kungälv, Askim, Gullbergsbro 1 (introducing a lot of talented young players) and also Skoghall showing their strength also in this discipline. Second round continued with wins for the same teams. It was already at that time quite clear that the results would not be as low as in the tour tournament two weeks before but there were many surprises yet to come.
Askim and Gullbergsbro 1 continued to win and Skoghall defeated Gullbergsbro 1 in the third round. In the fourth round it was time for another top game between Skoghall and Askim. After a tight beginning Askim took the command of the game and defeated Skoghall by 168 to 184 scoring the best team result to that point. In the fourth round we also saw the first tie game of this weekend in the game between Jönköping and Kungälv.
Kungälv were now in the need of more wins and in the next round they met Askim which once again showed out to be very strong in a game against a top team. Askim scored a new record with 166 strokes and Kungälv had 179 strokes. Askim was now in a comfortable lead and could easily take a win against Jönköping with a not very convincing 177 round but still 6 strokes ahead. Kungälv, on the other side, took a very convincing victory against top team Gullbergsbro 1 by seting a new record with a 163 round.
Would Askim win all games? The answer to this was no. Another Gothenburg team was standing in the way for that. Gullbergsbro 1 defeated Askim with 7 strokes and a good score of 168. In the end of this round Skoghall and Kungälv took important victories to still be fighting for the top places in the next round on eternite.
In the straight list we can see that the 14-year old Alexander Niord was in the top together with the 71-year old home player Ulla Forsman leaving many well known MOS players far behind. Both giving valuable contributions to their teams performances during the weekend.
The experience of having a MOS round was good. Many talked about playing this once again. Many also saw similarities to this and for example playing on concrete.
In Vänersborg, 100 kms from Gothenburg the second indoor league was playing on eternite.
Uddevalla from the neighbour city won in the final game against the home team, Hårdton IK
but as Uddevalla lost in their first game Hårdton is in the lead.
