In Part 2 of this series, we took a look at how both robotics and politics were teamed with minigolf to provide educational opportunities to a wide variety of people.
Our educational articles in this part of the series continue to focus on the scientific applications of miniature golf. The first article visits New Jersey, USA and a 5th grade classroom where they constructed miniature versions of miniature golf holes. The event was held in November 2016 and was the culmination of two months of work as the children focused on the ideas of area and engineering. The construction spanned the technology spectrum from old school cardboard and shoe boxes to 3D printing of clubs.
Up next is more minigolf in gardens. In Part 1 of this series we brought you to Hawaii and looked at their course in a botanical garden. Now we go to Florida, USA and swing by the South Florida Science Center's new course in their butterfly gardens. This course is designed by Jim Fazio and Gary Nicklaus, who's names you might recognize as sons of some pretty famous golfers. According to the Science Center's website "the Conservation Course educates guests about natural Florida habitats, specifically the Everglades, since each hole is named for animals or plants indigenous to South Florida. Players of all ages can enjoy the course and it's babbling brooks, butterfly gardens and lush green landscaping." They also expect to hold a tournament or two on the course. It looks beautiful and hope people take advantage of both the putting and the learning.
Our final link goes to up the East Coast to Philadelphia and takes a look at the new minigolf they have planned at Bartram's Garden, a National Historic Landmark. The new course will also bring in the power of art, using artist designed 9 holes to "tell the Bartram story through playful and meaningful artistic engagement." They hope that the course provides a fun learning experience so that visitors can further explore the "history and ecology of the oldest botanical garden in North America."
As always if you are aware of miniature golf being used in an educational capacity let us know so we can feature it in an upcoming article! » South Florida Science Center Facebook

Going Down Under for Minigolf

06 Feb 2017 at 14:52 | views: 11415 | Comments: 1
Editor’s Note: First I want to apologize to Australia. I can only pick one flag for an article so I went with New Zealand on this part as we’ll be doing a second part specifically on Allan so we’ll use Australia then! However, we did sneak both into the picture.
