In part 10 our series of re-posts of the youth interviews from the WMF Youth Facebook page, we have an interview with Nadine Jürgens from Switzerland (currently Austria). In case you missed the ninth in the series, you can catch it here. The following interview can also be found here.

Club: UBGC Klaus (Austria)
Birth year: 1999

Q1: How and when did you start to play Minigolf?

NJ: I started to play minigolf with my brother when my parents divorced nine years ago. At the beginning of the separation this was the only contact with our father. My brother quit after five years because he did not enjoy it anymore, but I was the direct opposite. I suppose I will be playing minigolf all my life because I enjoy it and I like getting to know new people and visit different places. My father has been playing minigolf for 39 years, because my grandparents founded a club a while back in the days. I have been playing minigolf for nine years now and as I mentioned earlier, it is nothing I am planning to stop doing.

Q2: What club do you use when you play and what is your favourite ball?

NJ: I use an older club when I play, but it suits me perfectly. It is a Benny.I have no favourite balls, but I have such balls that I always use when come to standard holes on felt for example.

Q3: What surface do you prefer the most? Follow-up question: Do you have a personal best (PB) that you are particularly proud of?

NJ: That's hard to say. I like most demanding courses such as Schruns, which is the oldest course in Austria.

Q4: Have you ever had a role model you looked up to during your early years? Maybe this person still is an inspiration for you today?

NJ: At the beginning my role model was my father, who played a leading role in almost every tournament I entered. At my first Swiss Championships, I had played a bad round and had tears in my eyes, my father was the one who always bothered for me. I also looked up to Heidi Stricker, who was my teenage trainer. She was one of the best in the world, so I learned a lot from being around her.

Q5: What is your biggest merit within Minigolf? (Doesn’t need to be related to competition)

NJ: My greatest merit within minigolf is that I have able to get to know people from other countries as well as to travel to many new countries and places while experience this sport.

Q6: What is your best/strongest memory from your years being a youth player?

NJ: That must be two years ago when I was placed fourth in Bischofshofen 2016. I had played good minigolf before that, but I did not think that I would be able to play so well three weeks before the World Championship. Also, I had the biggest team success in 2017 when we wrote history of being the first women's team from Vorarlberg to win the state champion title. Thus, then we were able to go to the European Cup in Algund (Italy). There we got a lot of experience and could compete with the best teams in Europe. A really great moment of mine.

Last Question: What is it about Minigolf that makes it so special?

NJ: What makes minigolf so special is that it is a sport that is common to both young and old. It is a sport that is not very demanding. To play good minigolf I think it is important to be mentally strong. Each person is different in playing style and showing emotions. One's emotions of joy might be with screaming, others cry and those like me shows it with a smile on their face.
