Excitement at the Liepaja Open 2019!

Excitement at the Liepaja Open 2019!
Youth Winners  (Photo by WMF - Youth Facebook Page)

The weekend of March 2-3 saw the 2019 Liepaja Open held in Liepaja, Latvia. While the tournament showcased a variety of ages in the competition, the youth categories were especially on display thanks to the Youth European Championship being held on the same course later in the year. In fact, many of the spots in the super final 8th round ended up being held by youth competitors.

Overall Daniel Moser (Switzlerand) eeked out the top spot by one stroke, despite Aki Sillman (Kungalvs BGK) being with him nearly stroke-for-stroke the entire tournament and closing a three stroke lead after six rounds down to just the one at the end. They finished with a 158 and 158 respectively after the eight rounds, which are both amazing averages of under 20 for the tournament. Alexander Dahlstedt (Tantogardens BGK) would take third overall with a 164. Their scores would also put them first through third in the overall men's category.

For the women, Alena Doleželova (Czech Republic) would end up blowing away the competition through her seven rounds of play. In the overall team competitions (seven rounds) the Swiss-1 team that included Moser along with Jan Anderegg and Lars Anderegg would combine for a overall score of 441, good enough to be eleven strokes clear of Lutra lutra 1 and nineteen ahead of third place Sweden-1.

The U23 team competition looked like it might come down to the wired with Sweden have a marginal edge of four strokes going into the seventh and final round over the Czech Republic. However, the pressure seemed to be nothing for the Swedes as they posted a low round of 58, ten better than the Czech team, to clear first place by 14 strokes. This included an 18 by Amir El Quachani, which would be one of the three perfect rounds of the tournament (Pasi Aho and Daniel Moser carding the others). Switzerland would post third in the U23 team competition. Alexander Njord, part of that Swedish winning effort, would win the junior men category and shoot a 166 overall, which was good enough for 4th in the straight list. This effort was tied by Jennifer Göransson, also part of the winning Swedish team) who would take first in the junior women's category.

The World Minigolf Sport Federation - Youth Facebook page has tons of pictures and videos covering the event and they are well worth the look. The final results can be found here.
