Sweden wins double in Rozemaai
Stig Pettersson celebrates the double gold together with Ronny Lundgren  (Photo by Annelie Larsson 2012)

The resigning head coach of the Swedish senior Team, Stig Pettersson was before the tournament wishing for a nice last performance, and maybe a team gold from either of his team in Rozemaai, Belgium. And how they listen and obeyed their captain for so many years. On the pretty trick eternit tracks the Swedish teams didn’t give the other teams much of a chance.

In the ladies class the Swedish senior star Linda Lundberg started off in a furious manner with 19-20. But then Annelie Larsson was not able to play as she did a month ago when she won the Swedish Championships and the team decided to change and let substitute Lena Nilsson play in the team already half way into lap two. But after that the Swedish ladies was not close to lose the gold position at any point. With the team results of 64-69-68-66-70-66 they were best all but one round. The winning team consisted of Linda Lundberg, Lena Nilsson, Annelie Larsson and Bernice Thors.

After Sweden Austria, Germany and Italy took turn in silver position but on the last two laps Germany showed their strength and lead by a brilliant playing Gaby Rahlow with 21-18 in the last two laps Germany took the silver, 17 after Sweden and 7 down to Austria in bronze position. The Italian ladies were in the end two strokes from bronze.

In the men’s competition Switzerland started best but in the second round Sweden passed. The Swedish gents were after this never really giving anyone else much of a chance. Lead by the number one individually, Martin Lundell, Sweden in the end won a landslide victory with 32 strokes.

Germany started off unusually slow and was only in sixth position after the first lap. In round two they were best and many thought that now they are going for gold. But this time the German team was far a little up and down and was never even close to compete for gold.

The fight for silver was more becoming and almost unbelievable thrilling story with Germany, Italy, Switzerland and Austria taking turn on the silver spot. In the end the Italian team with well-known anchor star Francesco Leuci was the strongest of the four. Ending with a two on lane 18 (the lightning) the Italians was one stroke in front of the rest. Of the four anchor men’s (where two of them were substitutes) it was only Mario Schneider of Switzerland that was acing the last lane. And Germany, Austria and Switzerland all ended in the same results. Austria won the team sudden death on lane two and took the bronze.

Best individual after two days are:

Ladies:
1. Gaby Rahmlow, Germany, 125
2. Elisabeth Kammerer, Austria, 132
3. Bernice Thors, Sweden 132
4. Lena Nilsson, Sweden, 132
5. Linda Lundberg, Sweden, 132

Mens:
1. Martin Lundell, Sweden, 120
2. Francesco Leuci, Italy, 124
3. Reinhard Zenggaffinen, Switzerland, 128
4. Reinhard Schuster, Austria, 129
5. Tomas Sennerby, Sweden, 129

Tomorrow the stroke play finals will be played.
