There are about 300 recesses on one golf ball, and thanks to them, the ball flies three times farther than a smooth one. ... Balls of the same size...

Minigolf and Bettering the Community – Part 9

Minigolfnews 14 Jun 2021 at 14:15 | Published by: PatPenguin | Views: 24179 | News search

Minigolf and Bettering the Community – Part 9 It’s been a little while since we reported on some of the non-competition aspects of miniature golf and with the world in a pandemic for over a year, many of these events were put on hold. However, these were also some of the ones to come back quickest given how they can be safely handled. In this chapter of our “Minigolf and Better the Community” series we’ll look at an interesting pay schedule at one course, the integration into June’s Pride festivities and a challenge that proves you can make a miniature golf course out of anything. You can find past articles covering the community based aspects of minigolf starting here.

First we head to Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada where
Play it Forward Funland has implemented a way to help families of all economic backgrounds enjoy a round of miniature golf. Recognizing the socio-economic demographics of their area, Play it Forward implemented a pay-what-you-can pricing structure for off-peak hours following in the footsteps of other types of business who have tried this. While the long-term impact of this isn’t known yet, it looks like those who can are certainly supporting those who can’t, showing the good that miniature golf can bring out in a community. Miniature golf in general is a low-cost family activity and making it even more flexible for those in need is admirable and we hope it works for the course. Next, June is Pride Month and you may have seen that the WMF fully supports all love being welcome on the mini-links and keeping hate out of our sport. Our next article doesn’t get much into the actual course but we thought it was good to also highlight that Pride organizations are bringing minigolf into the festivities during the month of June. If anyone played this course in Kentucky, United States and has some pictures we’d love to see them!

Finally, we wind our way to Pennsylvania in the United States where a small project that started out as a way to help people get back together after being cooped up due to the pandemic turned into a full 18 hole course
made out of cardboard. Besides challenging the design thinking of the young men who are part of an organization that assists individuals in the special needs community, the proceeds from the event will also support a local church. In reading the article, the act of coming up with the idea for the course and all of the themed hole designs was because one of the young men had simply just played a lot of minigolf. Just goes to show that one never knows where the experience of playing miniature golf growing up will take you.

We hope that with many part of the world coming out of the pandemic-related restrictions that we’ll be able to highlight many more uses of miniature golf around of the community. If you have a great example to share, reach out and we’ll try to feature it in our next part. Happy putting!
