Last Sunday, in a day in which the rain tried to make a show, but it wasn’t strong enough to stop the competition, the last one of four parts of the Portuguese individual national championship was played.
The set of this competition was the course of Portel, on the southern region of Portugal, where will also be held the Youth European Championship of next year. Men and women played 5 rounds of miniaturgolf and the younger and older categories played 4 rounds on the felt course.
Emotion was the word of the day. Starting with the title of youths, André Machado from CM Porto renewed the title on the last lane… which was Orkeljunga (that is a particularly hard one…) after playing a 2 and his opponent, that had been leading all the last round, played a 4.
More emotion came along for the men’s competition, in which André Manuel, the international Portuguese star player, after his 10th place on the European Championship, was leading the competition up until the last round. After the 4th round, the difference for the second place was 2 strokes. However, on the beginning of the 5th round it was just 1… because the referees’ team decided to give him a penalty stroke after he forgot to write down the last lane’s result of his starting group colleague. On the last round, João Nabais, from MC Portugal, won 3 strokes and won the men’s title by 2 strokes.
As for the seniors, Eduardo Salazar, from CM Porto, renewed for the fourth time the title, but this year it was a close match with Belarmino Soares, also from CM Porto, that was just 2 strokes behind before the two final rounds.
The women’s title went to Anabela Pereira from CM Costa Nova, in a non difficult battle, as there were none of the last years’ champions.
Vizelgolfe won two titles: Amara Silva as the female junior and António Maria as the male kid were the club heroes.
Finally, two more titles came to CM Porto, which totalized 4 titles between the 8 played. Luís Silva, a rising star on the Portuguese minigolf panorama (and Portuguese coach during the European Championship 2012…), won the Junior competition with a 59 strokes’ difference, a miniaturgolf green average and a blue round on feltgolf, and Carlos Paulo made his debut as National champion on the class of old-timers.
