Interview with Achim Braungart-Zink (ABZ), Germany and SG Arheilgen
This interview was done the 7th of April 2013. Interviewer is Hans Bergström (HB).
HB: First of all congratulations to a great season of 2012 which lead to the vote for “Man player of the Year” on Minigolfnews. Did you expect to win the vote?
ABZ: Thank you very much. To be honest: I did it expect it a bit, but I expected a much closer fight between me an Karel, who played a great tournament with incredible results at the European Cup.
HB: You won with a quite broad margin both in the public and the expert vote. Which of the results, the public vote or the expert votes do you value the most?
ABZ: I like both and I don’t see a big difference between the votes, because nearly all the voters of the public vote also play minigolf, and so they are quite experts, too.
HB: Looking back on Porto and your three medals. Which is the moment you remember the most now a half year later?
ABZ: The moment after my last shot in strokeplay is still present. There were so many people around and so many comin’ in my direction, at first my teammate Dennis Kapke. The tension fell off and I could really enjoy these moments.
HB: In Porto you also set some world records but just two month later all of them were beaten again on the EC in Vizela. What was your feeling after having lost the world records in such a short time after?
ABZ: There were no special feelings, because the world records were not that important for me. More important was my performance for the team. As I said in our last interview: I always try to play my best minigolf to help the team to have success with the team. That’s the focus and that’s what makes me satisfied, not any records.
HB: You have recently gone through a back surgery. Can you tell us about your injury and if the surgery went well?
ABZ: Everything went well. I had a disc prolapse. But it is nothing to talk about, because I’m on the best way to get well soon.
HB: So how do you feel about the upcoming season? Will it be possible to find the motivation after a year of total success such as last year?
ABZ: Motivation never is a problem, when you look forward to play a WC at home in Germany.
HB: How does your season planning look like for 2013?
ABZ: At first I try to get well after the surgery. I have to cancel the first Bundesliga-match in Wittlich. Then I have to practice a lot to get fit for the next tournaments, because I haven’t played any shot since November. My hope is, to reach my best level as soon as possible to give some references to the coaches for the WC nominations.
HB: Again a big congratulation to the title “Men player of the year” and good luck in the future.
ABZ: Thanks again!
