Pauli Kuikka wins again in Askim
04 May 2009 at 10:38 | Published by: Hans | Views: 9833 | News search
When Pauli won last years competition on the newly build artificial grass MOS course in Askim, Slottskogen, it was a surprise winner. Pauli is normally a C-class player on the other surfaces so a tournament victory was not on the map, but he did anyway. So this year it was time to show if it was luck or if this MOS course suites him really well.
In the preliminary rounds the best results where made by Swedish national team player Sandra Weaver with an average of 40,5. Also notable is the new course record of 36 made on the last round by the junior home team player Magnus Carlsson.
At the route to the final in Sundays cup play Pauli met, WMF General Secretary Roger Cadosch, Mattias Strand and Bengt Svensson. Bengt won over a Sandra Weaver in the quarter finals after a dramatic final where Sandra lead with 4 strokes with 2 lanes to go. But a seven for Sandra on the challenging bridge (lane 17) made it possible for Bengt to win by a two on the eighteen. On the other side of the cup-three Hans Bergström, Uddevalla and Magnus Carlsson, Askim had proceeded into the semifinal. When Hans made two high scores on lane 14 and 16 Magnus could easily take the final stand.
The final was a tight and well played match which ended in sudden death. On lane 3 a unlucky 3 for Magnus made once again Pauli the champion. So for another year Pauli can entitle himself the king of MOS in Sweden. Who will challenge him next year?

05 May 2009 at 10:53 | These type of MOS course is a bit different from other Minigolf so I don't think its strange that different skills come into play. Here you don't need skills needed in normal Minigolf like extreme precision, ball knowledge, spin skills etc. On the MOS course in Askim you need putting skills and ability to handle situations that you haven't been able to practice in advance. Obviously Pauli has those skills. |

05 May 2009 at 06:45 | The cup system is an identity problem for minigolf as a serious sport, because too often the winner is a "class B" or "class C" player, someone whom people don't view as a great player legend. So also the champion title gets a "class B" or "class C" status in people's minds. |

05 May 2009 at 06:40 | That is not a problem with MOS, but a problem with the playing system. I want to say a bit more about this, maybe I will come back later to the MOS issue. I have to go now :P |

04 May 2009 at 22:36 | I have difficulties to see that MOS is a fair form of surface to compete in, when two years in a row you put good players on the start and still you can win it as a class c-player. No offence meant, Pauli. This is strictly a way to see it statistically. |

04 May 2009 at 20:54 | Nice to see that Sandra W was clearly the best in preliminary rounds. It gives credibility to MOS minigolf, when generally the best players get best scores also in MOS competitions. | Add comment | To add comments, you need to log in.
