The Executive Board of International Olympic Committee has today decided that golf and rugby should be included in Olympic Games 2016. This decision needs yet to be confirmed by IOC Congress in October of this year.
Both of these games have been played at Olympics also before. Golf was played at Olympic Games 1900 and 1904. Rugby was played last time in 1924 Olympics, with 15 players on each side. Now rugby will return to Olympics in a different format, with only seven players on each side.
Other leading candidates, which were rejected in the vote today, were baseball, softball (a different form of baseball), karate, rollersports and squash. » news article in BBC Sport » PGA campaign page for including golf in Olympic Games 2016

14 Aug 2009 at 11:19 | Golf becoming an Olympic sport might be good economical and sponsorship news to the minigolfers of Russia, Ukraine, New Zealand and Moldova, who are members of the national golf federation. NZ and Moldova never play much of minigolf anywhere, though. I wonder if they ever will. |

13 Aug 2009 at 20:51 | This schizophrenia you speak about John is exactly (according to me) the key issue. Should not the minigolf try to exist as such and not as a parent of golf ? That we consider it (or not) as a sport, it has to distinguish itself on the contrary of golf. The minigolf's specificities look like much more "billiard" (8 pool) : duration of competitions, number of rounds, mental, nervous, stress... |

13 Aug 2009 at 19:56 | Minigolf has a schizophrenic relationship with golf. 10% of WMF members are actually golf federations, not minigolf federations (Russia, Ukraine, New Zealand, Moldova). In Britain the national sport authorities classify minigolf as a form of golf, but the golf federation is not interested in minigolf. In USA the minigolf federation(s) work hard to be seen as the little brother of golf, but also there the golf federation is not much interested in minigolf. |

13 Aug 2009 at 17:33 | I don't know about other players but I think that kind of sports deserve the "Olympic spirit". I play minigolf for 18 years and I like it but I think however it's a way of tarnishing the values of the Olympic movement to integrate sports like golf, rugby or moreover the others already present as football, basketball or tennis. Moreover, it's well known that it's a shape of lobbying who influence the choices of newcomers as taekwondo in 1988 (Seoul) or baseball in 1996 (Atlanta). | Add comment | To add comments, you need to log in.
