One of Swedens "Grand Old Men" showed yesterday that he is still going strong. 69-years old Sven-Olof Ericsson from VK-78 in Gävle outperformed all of his younger (and older) competitors at the Swedish Championship for Seniors players.
The competition was held in Haninge (Stockholm) on felt and was played over 7 rounds in 4 days. This is one of the biggest felt-competition every year (if not the biggest) in Sweden and therefore most likely the world’s biggest. This year 130 players showed up.
Sven-Olof competed in the Veteran Class (age over 58) and really played well in the end of the competition. On round 5 he broke the course record with a 25 and then followed that up with a 27 and a 26. Using only 78 strokes on the last three rounds was 14 strokes better than anyone else in the competition and left Sven-Olof winning his class by a margin of 27 strokes down to the second place Sven Svensson of Södertälje BGK. Another two strokes behind came another “Grand Old Men” Peter Söderlund of Sundsvalls .
I the ladies Veteran class (age over 58) there was also a huge victory for "Grand Old Lady" Monika Andersson, Djulö BGK, best of all ladies using 240 strokes and winning with 23 stokes before silver medalist Ulla Britt Eriksson from Enköping BGK. The Bronze medal was won by Anitha Bäckström from Umeå BGK.
I the Oldboys Class (age between 46 and 58) it was at the end Lars-Göran Berg of MGK 49 Nyköping , that won with a stable 216 stokes. Last year’s winner Tommy Blixt could be found in silver position 4 strokes behind and Bronze was won by Bengt Neuman of Skönsbergs SK another 7 strokes after.
In the Oldgirls Class (age between 46 and 58) Pirkko Maaninka of Eskilstuna BGK won the gold using 253 strokes. In Siler position 4 strokes behind Ann Marie Lindvall of Örebro BGK and in third position another two strokes behind was Irene Bergström of Växjö BGK.
3-men Team was won by Örebro and 5-men team is still not completed.
