World Championships 2007 in Canegrate turned into a celebration
of Germans, who took home half of all medals awarded in the competition.
Austria played strong game in women’s team competition,
but some mistakes in the last double round allowed the Germans
to pass them by five points, to take their sixth team gold in a row.
Sweden took bronze, only one point behind Austria.
During the last 10 years, the women’s team of Germany has lost only once to another team,
as Sweden left them to silver in Vaasa 2001.
In men’s team competition Germany got a secure lead already in the first double round,
and marched to a long-awaited gold medal. (Germany’s previous gold medal in men’s team
competition was from 2002 in Prague.)
Sweden took silver 15 points behind Germany, and Switzerland got bronze 7 points behind
Sweden.
Individual tournament ended with a cup competition, for the third time
in history (the first two times were 1989 in Karlsruhe and 1991 in Oslo).
The leaders in total points, Harald Erlbruch and Sandra Weaver,
did not survive the cup phase, but other great players from top of
the scoreboard gave the audience a show of great skill and strong emotions.
Marco Templin of Germany might have won the competition with total points too,
but now his road to gold went through cup matches against André van Vliet (NED),
Marcus Larsson (SWE), Rudi Giroldini (ITA), Manfred Lindmayr (AUT) and silver medalist
Marco Balzer (GER). Christian Freilach of Austria won the bronze match against
his compatriot Manfred Lindmayr.
In women’s cup competition Elisabeth Gruber of Austria completed her medal
collection with gold, the only colour that was still missing from her.
Her cup matches were against Alice Kobisch (GER), Nicole Piechotta (GER),
Tryntsje Schakel (NED) and silver medalist Bianca Oberweg (GER).
Nicole Gundert-Greiffendorf of Germany won the bronze match against Tryntsje Schakel,
in a thriller that needed two sudden death lanes, after the initial 18 lanes ended
in a tie.
