The 26th edition of international tournament "San Martino" was played on Vergiate concrete course this weekend (same course where ECup 2011 will take place).
The tournament started on Saturday 31st Oct. at 11 am and ended Sunday 1st Nov. at 3.30 pm. 3 rounds for all players and category. 132 players started in this tournament.
Vergiate course was renewed in 2008 and scores are getting better each tournament. Many "green" rounds, that were very rare to see before 2008, so it is expectable that during ECup 2011 we will see some very good scores.
In the men category it was a close match between Paolo Porta (MGC Novi Ligure) and several home players. After 2 rounds, Paolo lead the tournament with 56 strokes ( 27-29 ), just one stroke ahead of 3 Vergiate players, Domenico Garbui, Ivan Baruscotti and Rudi Giroldini who were in second place with 57 strokes. During last round, Paolo ended with 28 strokes and won the tournament (his 2nd time, the first was in 2007) with 84 total strokes, three ahead of Domenico Garbui ( 87 ) and 4 better than Massimo Diotti (MT Amatese) and Rudi Giroldini ( 88 ).
The second best overall result was scored by the youth home player Lorenzo Levis, which ended with 86 strokes ( 29 - 30 - 27 ) and continues his great season after big performances at YEC 2009 in Waldshut and ECup 2009 in Vaduz. 2nd place in the Youth category for Lorenzo Ciompi (ASDMC Follonica) with 97 strokes, 3rd Nicola Bellucci (ASDMC Follonica) with 98 strokes.
The ladies category was won by Anna Catanzaro (MMC Paderno) with 93 strokes.
The senior men category was won by Luigi Benvenuto (GSP Lozza) with 91 strokes.
The senior ladies category was won by Emilia Prina (MMC Paderno) with 96 strokes.
The schoolboys category was won by Emanuele Prestinari (MGC Novi Ligure) with 91 strokes.
As regards the team event, as usual in this tournament we had a home victory by GSP Vergiate 1 team (Rudi Giroldini, Lorenzo Levis, Massimiliano Ciceri, Ivan Baruscotti) that ended with an excellent score of 236 strokes ( 29.5 average), leaving MGC Novi Ligure in second place with 245 strokes ( 30.6 average).
A big result was also obtained by Michele Graffeo (MMC Paderno) that equalized the course record during first round with 24 strokes (but couldn't manage to mantain the same level in the other two rounds, having played 38 and 32...) » Live results
