BMGA Pressrelease:
The BMGA makes its debut in Scotland as Pirate Island Adventure Golf in Aberdeen, in association with STV, hosts the first ever Scottish Open minigolf championship on Sunday 16th May.
Over 40 British Minigolf Association (BMGA) Tour players, along with a number of local and international players are expected to compete over four rounds (72-holes) on the 18-hole Pirate-themed Adventure Golf course at Codona’s Aberdeen Beach. The tee-off time is 9am on May 16th.
Among the competitors vying to become the first-ever Scottish Open Minigolf Champion are reigning Castle Golf World Crazy Golf Champion Keith Kellard, Chris Harding, the former World Crazy Golf Champion, and two-time BMGA British Open Champion Jouni Valkjärvi from Finland.
The competition has one of the biggest purses available this year on the BMGA tour with a guaranteed prize fund of £1500. The overall winner will take away £500, with cash prizes on offer for the top six places. The top novices and local players will also be competing for prizes with the winner picking up £100, £75 for the runner-up, and £50 for the third placed novice/local player.
An Aces Champion will also be crowned at the tournament, with £50 going to the player who scores the most holes-in-one across the event, excluding players who pick up any of the other prize money.
The venue for the tournament is the Pirate Island Adventure Golf course, one of Aberdeen's ‘must do’ attractions. The course includes a 25ft high volcano and an exploding pirate ship. It is also fully floodlit so games can be played day or night, and the course in wheelchair accessible.
BMGA Chairman Sean Homer said “We are delighted to be making our first trip into Scotland for the Scottish Open at Pirate Island Adventure Golf in Aberdeen as part of the 2010 tour. The venue and location are superb, and with the competition being played out across a top class course we are guaranteed a terrific event on the 16th of May. The quality of the field is also shaping up to be one of the strongest fields for any competition on the BMGA tour this year. Some of the players to look out for include Chris Harding, the winner of the first two events of the year, Keith Kellard the current British Champion and World Crazy Golf Champion along with the two time British Open winner, Jouni Valkjärvi from Finland.”
Sean added “Most of our top ranked players are making the trip up to Scotland and we are also hoping to see a strong turnout of local players to add further spice into the event. It’s our first time at the course so it will be a real leveller and impossible to call regarding who will triumph. Whatever happens, it is bound to be a great event and myself and all the players are looking forward to what will hopefully be the first of many trips up to Scotland as part of the BMGA tour!”
Ian Littlewood, Operations Director of John Codona's Pleasure Fairs said “We are really looking forward to staging the debut of the Scottish Open for the British Minigolf Association. We are looking to have around 40 competitors coming to the event, with some coming from as far afield as Sweden and Finland as well as some local faces taking part. Let’s hope for good weather on the day!”
Ian added “Our Pirate Island Adventure Golf course is very popular during all the Easter, Summer and October holidays and all the family can play. The course can be used for any occasion whether it is a child’s birthday party, corporate outing or hen and stag party. It’ll also be great to see the BMGA competitors giving the course a try too.”
