On the first weekend of the year the Swedish Cup has become a very popular tradition in later years. Since the modus is only 4-men and its played indoor on eternit in match play KO-modus it opens for very tight and exiting matches with surprises along the cup-three.
This year the competition is played in the easy indoor eternit of MunktellArenan in Eskilstuna.
On Saturday the 22 Teams was ranked and divided into 4 group’s playing for positioning in Sundays 16 Team -Cup three.
Group A was won by the Elitserie Bronze Medalist Sjöviken, that was winning all 5 matches without playing at their best. Second was the hope from the north, Skönsberg. Group B was won by Södertälje after having beaten Kungälv in the group final. Group C was the tightest group on the paper and was a bit surprisingly won by Tyresö before Mjölby and Tantogården only in third place. Group D was won with ease by Uppsala.
On Sunday lots of tough matches were played as expected on the easy Munktell courses. On a course where you really needs a Team average below 20,5 to be competitive there are no big margin for mistakes.
Uppsala started their two first matches with brilliant play (76-77) and two victories and was ready for the semifinals. Tantogården had it a bit tougher and won two hard matches to meet Uppsala. Meeting Tantogårdens is a task that not even Uppsala can take on with ease and for the first time in the Tournament Uppsala was in trouble. And when Uppsala could only achive an average score of 83 Tantogården could win with by playing a good 80.
On the lower half the two Stockholm area Teams, Tyresö and Södertälje. won their matches to meet in the second semifinal. This match was never much of a match since Södertälje didn’t give the Tyresö Team any chance at all. In the end it was an easy win for Södertälje with 78 against 89.
The bronze match was won by Uppsala over Tyresö by 77-92.
In the final the Södertälje Team was really hungry for a first ever Swedish Cup victory and Tantogården was this time not strong enough hinder this Södertälje Team from succeeding with this. Södertälje made another blue round of 79 to win the cup by 9 strokes. Big victory maker for Södertälje was Marcus Johansson with 18 both in the semifinal and in the final.
