Erlbruch, Gruber and Weber on top of WMF rankinglist

The 2010 season ending ranking list from WMF has been published by WMF.

On the ladies side the two finalists from the Predazzo Championships Rebecca Weber, Switzerland and Elisabeth Gruber, Austria, are in tied first position. In third place we find another dominant from Predazzo Switzerlands Melanie Blaser that was best of all in the qualifying rounds.

The two ladies that have dominated the WMF ranking list since 2008, Karin Wiklund, Sweden and Elisabether Realla, Austria was not playing internationally during 2010 and has slipped into 7th and 9th positions.

At the men’s side Walter Erlbruch, Germany is found in top. Walter was knocked out in the quarterfinals in Predazzo and is stepping up from last rankings second position taking over from Anders Olsson, Sweden that has been in top position since November 2007. Anders was not playing in Predazzo and has now dropped down to 7th place. In second position we find Switzerland’s Reto Sommer stepping up from Bronze to silver and third we find the younger Erlbruch brother Harald.

The European Champion Erik Tiekstra, Netherlands is still suffering from a weak 2009 season and is found in 14th position.

On the juniors list Germanys Anna Nitschke is still leading the girls and Swiss Nicolai Bhend has taken over the lead amongst the boys from Vit Skaloud.

On the seniors list Austrias Maria Fuschelberger is still leading the ladies and Germanys Karl-Heinz Gewert is also still on top amongst the gentlemen's.

Best nation in all categories are Germany.

No JJM, it has always been up to the national federation which championships they choose to report for the world ranking list. There has never been a combination, possibly some nation has made a combination of their results before sending, but that is the only possibility.

Short explanation for outsiders: from countries which play more than one national championship tournament per year (Netherlands, Finland, Denmark, Norway, Germany, Austria, etc.) WMF ranking nowadays includes just one national championship tournament, and the others are simply excluded. So you can be national champion without getting any WMF ranking points. In the past (was it 3 or 4 years ago?) WMF ranking included all national championships in some way, I guess the several championships were somehow combined into one ranking event, which was then imported to WMF ranking.

Next JJM may be claiming that the Finnish federation reported on purpose just that championships (of all three) which he didn't play! :-) Damn these conspiracies.

I guess this is the main attraction of the the rankings, making people argue about its fairness, and in the end only the 1st placed thinks the rankings are OK.

Cool, I don't have any WMF ranking points, not even one ranking point, despite a gold medal and a bronze medal at Finnish Championships this season.

Paolo and Erik, sure...the problem is mostly that if the organizer reports the results or not...the list managers can't know to search all the tournaments by themselves.

At least with the YC we always try to figure out which youth tournaments could be considered for the list. The mode of the youth ranking list says that any such tournaments can be included through a motion to the Youth Committee. But not too many people seem to be interested in the mode. Rather only interested in the list when the results appear, if even then. I can understand that it is not on top of the priorities, but the chance to include such tournaments is given.

What about NC-like tournaments as it was played this year in Predazzo? I think that if matches between 2 countries are included, we should do the same also with these NC tournaments which are not really Nations' Cup but anyway a tournament for national elite teams.

Isn't it fair to include fe. The matches between Belgium & Netherlands aswell? What are the conditions of the WMF to be included in the ranking as a competition? Not that I played any of those matches (neither the Dutch Champs). I'm just wondering :)

Erik: not WMF organized, but neither are Nordic Championships nor other friendly matches between national teams such as annual Germany-Switzerland youth match, just to name two examples.
