Swedens Stefan Viberg shows his protocol after his course record round of 22  (Photo by Appelscha crew 2013)

It was the German ladies lead by their grand old lady Gaby Rahmlow that took the gold in the ladies class in Appelscha. But for quite long it was looking like the Swedish ladies should defend their title from last year.

After 3 of six laps the Swedish ladies was in the lead with 7 strokes. On round 4 Annelie Larsson in Sweden got a really bad start and the team made a change to Lena Nilsson. In retrospect this change was maybe a mistake since Annelie then started to play brilliant again and after the substitution played 12 strokes better than her replacer on the remaining laps.

But the last three laps the German ladies was the better team. Lead by the lady playing in a class of her own, Gaby Rahmlow they could win by a comfortable 13 strokes. 13 strokes are also what Gaby leads with in the individual stroke play before the last rounds played this afternoon. Swedens Linda Lundberg is in second place.

Austria took the ladies bronze with a large margin in both directions.

Individually after six rounds:

3. Annelie Larsson, Sweden 183
4. Bernice Thors, Sweden 183
5. Elisabeth Kammerer, Austria 183

In the men’s category it was all along a close battle between Germany and Sweden. Sweden took the lead in the beginning but Germany overtook the lead after a terribel third lap by the Swedish men (185). This was against the Germans sharp round of 165 and all of a sudden it looked like a German victory. But then the Germans made an even worse round of 194 and the Swedes could again take over the lead by a 167 round. Now the Swedes were in the driving seat again.

On round five the Germans could get closer and before the last round that was played on Friday morning the Swedes had only a two stroke margin. This was to be a dramatic round for the Germans. After playing with the outstanding Swede Stefan Viberg for a while Robert Kullick made a substitution with Udo Rathje. Udo had not been playing at all in the tournament before, due to illness, and could not really match the Swedish phantom. In the end Stefan took 9 strokes on the Germans and when Swedens Peter Nordin took another 3 it was a long way back for the Germans. But the brave German gentlemen’s never gave up and through a 24 on veteran Karl-Heinz Gerwert they came back again.

In the end it was a battle between the two anchormen’s Peter Söderlund and Markus Janssen. Peter had five strokes to go. With a stable round of 32 Peter could bring home the gold again to Sweden just like last year. Markus made a 30 and this left the Germans in silver position by 3 strokes.

The fight for bronze was won by Austria with 13 strokes over Switzerland.
