During this weekend the Italian Youth ans Senior Championships have been played in historical course of Bovisio Masciago (near Milan).
This is a very old concrete course, built more than 50 years ago and with the typical feature of all old courses where you can't score many aces but you have to play with less faults as possible: infact we had only 5 "green" rounds and nothing better than a 29.
Modus of the tournament has been the following: 2 days, 5 rounds for teams event, plus one final round for individual youth, schoolboys and senior categories.
The competition has been very close in all categories.
Only two teams in the youth event, but with a very intense match that ended tied after 5 rounds: MC Follonica had 16 strokes advantages before the last round, but they lost all in the 5th rounds also due to a great round of Vergiate boys (31-31-32).
The playoff ended at lane one with Vergiate 1-2-2 vs Follonica 2-2-2. For GSP Vergiate this is the 4th youth title of its history.
The senior team event had a top favourite in MT Amatese team. that showed it on the course winning with 24 stroke advantages.
There had been some battle only for the silver medal place, that GSP Lozza took with just one stroked advantage on MC Monza.
The individual event in the youth category saw Emanuele Prestinari winning his first youth title with a great performance: 193 strokes (32,2 average) that gave him a massive lead on the second ranked player, Nicola Bellucci (MC Follonica). The defending champion Daniele La Rocca (MMC Paderno) after a bad start could only get the bronze medal place with a good final comeback.
The title is a confirmation of the great season Emanuele is having, his very good results will allow him to play in the elite national team in Porto in August, which is something special at his young age.
The schoolboys category saw a very nice match between two youngsters, Duccio Cheli (MC Follonica, defending champion) and Riccardo Velati (GSP Vergiate). After 5 rounds of nice play, the two arrived tied at the last lane: Duccio scored an ace, Riccardo only three so the title went again to Duccio (two Italian championships played in the schoolboys category, two titles!)
Some big surprises in the senior ladies category: the top favourites, national players Antonella Flamini, Anna Catanzaro, Ornella Campora had a bad start and could not get in the match for gold. Only Ornella had a good recovery in the second day but it stopped just one strokes from the top place. The title went to Emilia Prina (MMC Paderno) , one stroke better than Ornella and two better than the experienced Luisa Cibin from GSP Lozza.
Very close match in the senior men category between three of the top favourite players: Antonio Di Bella that played on his home course, Gioachino Ricchiuto and Francesco Leuci.
Leuci ended the first day in the lead with 3 strokes advantage, and stayed there until the last round, with one stroke on Ricchiuto and two on Di Bella. The last round has been played lane by lane by the three players, after 10 lanes they were all tied. Leuci missed some aces so Di Bella and Ricchiuto went over until lane 17 still with same score. Di Bella scored an ace, Ricchiuto played a good but unlucky shot and losed the decisive stroke right there. Di Bella then ended the round with 1 stroke advantage on Ricchiuto and two on Leuci that got the bronze medal place.
This is the third senior title for Antonio Di Bella, after those won in 1998 and 2004. He ended with a very good total of 190 strokes (31,7 average) which is the new record of this very old course.
