Our resident blogger Steve Lovell had moment between round seven and the super final, round eight, at the Irish Open to talk with Pauli Kuikka from Sweden about his record breaking round. You can read about the results in our story here and check out the blogs for Steve's review of his experience.
Steve Lovell (SL): I'm here with Pauli Kuikka from Sweden, who yesterday (Saturday) did something rather special. We'll get on to that in a moment. But first, welcome to Dublin. Is it your first time here?
Pauli Kuikka (PK): First time here, first time in Ireland.
SL: And you're enjoying it?
PK: Yes, I like it here.
SL: What do you think of the course at the Rainforest Adventure Golf?
PK: It's good fun. There are quite of number of aces there, can be a little boring at times and the pipe holes are sometimes unfair and you need a little bit of luck there, but if you play well, you can quickly get a good score.
SL: What made you want to take part in the first ever Irish Open?
PK: I like playing adventure golf back in Sweden as well as England and the USA. I have been to some tournaments where I was the coach and I thought this time, I wanted to play one for myself.
SL: I mentioned at the start that you did something special, which was to break the world record for the Adventure Golf MOS style course with a round of 23. Many congratulations. Tell us about the round.
PK: Thank you, thank you. I didn't have the best of starts. I got the first. Two and three were a couple of inches away. Four you need the luck and it didn't go. And then I had the perfect shot on five, six and seven. Dropped it in on eight. Perfect shot on nine and ten. The pipe hole on eleven, I hit a good shot but it didn't go in but I thought six in a row is still good. Twelve, perfect shot. Thirteen, perfect shot. Fourteen, perfect shot. I felt it, I just couldn't miss. Fifteen and sixteen were perfect. Seventeen was not so good but it still went in. Eighteen I was very nervous and played my only bad shot but I was still close enough for the two and the record. I came off the course shaking, I was so happy to do that in a tournament.
SL: We knew you were doing well from about the twelfth onwards as the cheers were getting louder.
PK: I shouted, it felt so good.
SL: And so you should. Pauli, once again, congratulations on a new world record of 23 and good luck for the last round.
PK: Thank you so much.
